Free For All Friday:

Whoa... sorry I'm late today.  I got a late start.

A couple of announcements and then it's off to Free For All Friday...
  • Create-a-Flavor Contest:  So here's how the contest went down.  Richard voted for Maureen's Cappuccino Biscotti.  I voted for Cassie's Chocolate Masterpiece and Ricky voted for Lori's Vanilla with caramel, chocolate, chocolate covered (something... you left that part out), plain waffle cone bits, and pecans.  Matthew who is four idolizes his brother.  So... Matthew voted for, "whatever flavor Ricky picked."  That makes Lori the winner!  Thanks for all the great ideas everyone.  We actually generated some really good ideas.
  • Ketel One:  To all of you who thought there was no difference between the bottles, I agree.  I think the genius of the ad is precisely that.  No differences between the ads assures we - the general public - will pour over the picture for long periods of time... just to make sure.  Richard thinks I'm wrong and was emphatic about contacting the company to resolve.  I suspect the fact that he never came back to say, "I told you so" means he finally saw the light.

Onward and upward...  It's the time of day when I turn the blog over to you the readers.  Post a question, share something creative you've seen, or answer a question posed.  I have two items to get us started.
  • National Friendship Day:  I have this listed in my calendar as being Saturday, August 2.  A good friend of mine recently sent an email indicating that TODAY is National Girlfriend's Day.  Either way... it is time for us to celebrate our friendships.  Let's use part of today's Free for All generating a list of things we could do to honor/celebrate our friends.  Don't worry you found out too late to act on any of the suggestions.  I ascribe to the belief that when, for instance, you write a birthday card ON someones birthday it is just as special as their receiving the card on their birthday.  The same will apply with any gesture made on National Friendship Day.
  • Down with K.I.S.S.:  I can't stand it.  All week I've been looking at Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday's titles and cringing.  The title is not fun or funny and the colon immediately following the period is either a grammatical mess or a graphic train wreck.  Help me develop a new name for my "Scrap-Journaling" system, so I can change the titles.
Signing off until tomorrow...

I am posting this on behalf of Peggy who was having technical difficulties yesterday and couldn't post herself...

Shell! Thank you for all the great "stuff" awaiting me when I got home from my vacation today! There are so many cool things... now that you left your return address, I'll have to make you a creative greeting card with all the bling and send you a "happy day" card. Thanks again for this weeks fun package!!!

Peanut... Thank you so much for my "Starbucks" card. I will be using it today. Also my husband tried stealing it from me and hid it so he could use it. I knew something was up when he asked me who "PEANUT" was.....

Richard when you are in NY again I will take you to Cold Stone Creamery and we will have my concoction.

Claudia I just got all the supplies I needed for scrap book journaling. I too will start today. I will keep you posted. How about calling it Memories Made Simple . That all I have at 8:20 in the morning! HAve a great day everyone!!!!!

Oops about the "Friendship Day". I have few really close friends and I talk to them often. I don't keep up with the calendar so I wouldn't acknowledge them on "Friendship Day". I do however email cards when all else fails or I forget to mail something so I am off to Hallmark.com.... Thanks for the heads up!!!

What a way to start my first day back to work! Tell Ricky and Matthew they have GREAT taste! The "chocolate covered" was waffle cones...I think it needs both chocolate covered waffle cone pieces and plain waffle cone pieces. You could also cover the pecans in chocolate...as long as there is some chocolate present!
Scrap -Journaling name...hummmm...all I can think of right now is something like "Future Reflections" or to go along with Maureen's idea of Memories Made Simple it could be "Preserving Memories for Dummies"....seems like there is a book for everything these days titled "_______ for Dummies!" One more take on Maureen's idea..MemoRAYS Made Simple...with that you could incorporate Ray into it! Speaking of Ray...how is he doing these days?
Happy Friendship/Girlfriend Day! Off to work....=(

I'm fortunate enough to have two best friends, one from college and one from high school, and I'm very close to both of them, but am not great about sending anything on time for a particular date, so I try to send my love randomly throughout the year. Very occasionally, I send my BFF (college) a haiku because I think they're fun to write and fun to receive. Plus, she gets that it's the sort of thing that only I would do for her. And for my other BFF (high school), our big thing currently is "poking" one another and sending virtual gifts of yarn--she's a huge knitting nerd--and "flair" back and forth on Facebook. Sad, but it works for us, and also happens to be amusing.

As for your posts, I don't know what to call it. The Un-Scrapbook? Scrap the Scrapbook? Regardless of the name, I have a question: what kind of folder/envelope do you use for each year? Is it one of those soft plastic-y/vinyl pocket envelopes, or a plastic accordion file, or what? And do you have a place to keep the occasional three-dimensional keepsake, such as a favorite stuffed animal or blankie? Does that also go in the treasure box?

Happy August! I cannot believe the summer went by so quick. Actually, I can. It does it to me every year. I am happy and sad it is August. First the sad, then the HAPPY! August is the month I have to return to school for classes. BUT it is my last year of nursing school and then I'm out in the real world...and HAPPY! because August is my birthday month; but it's not just any birthday this year-- it's the BIG 2-1 for me. I have two weeks from tomorrow and then I will finally be 21 like the rest of my friends!! YAY!

DARN IT Matthew! I almost won the ice cream challenge! Thanks for a vote Dr. B!

I can't think of any fun names for your un-scrapbooking system, sorry!

National Friendship Day?! How fun! Here are my ideas:
1. RAK box with lots of goodies in it
2. Just a phone call to say Happy Friendship Day
3. A handwritten card or an e-card
4. Tickets to an upcoming concert that you both want to go to (hint hint) lol just kidding
5. Buy something that they have wanted for a long time
6. A movie that you both love and brings back some memory of your friendship (I am obsessed with sisterhood of the traveling pants right now...and since the second one is coming out on aug 6th, how about buying your friend the first one on dvd and taking her to go see the second one?)

ok, thats it from me for now!

Fun ideas, Cassie P. Will you be my friend? Maybe we could go out for a dip of that scrumptious ice cream flavor you suggested!

I never got to comment about your "scrapjournaling" idea, so I wanted to today... By the way, I like the name "Memories Made Simple" that Maureen suggested.

I use this system in a modified way. I like the idea of journaling, I"ve done it since my son was born, but I don't love journaling on a calendar and having empty days, and then having it spill over to other days if I want to write a lot. I like neatness more than some I think :) So I journal for him in a blank lined notebook. Then I can write as much or as little as I want. I also add pictures, hospital bracelets, etc.. Just a fun idea, I bought the journal online at Snapfish, and you can put your child's picture on the cover, along with any words, so you could put the dates for the year, their name, whatever. I put a picture from his first birthday on it, so I'll always know it's for when he's one.
I'm also a big big fan of traditional scrapbooking, so I do both and I love both! I think it's fun to have a really pretty and creative scrapbook so you can keep memories of what they looked like, but then journal what they are like!! (to copy you from earlier this week)

Anyway, one more idea to add. I tape record my son on a small tape recorder, just a minute or so, about once a month. I've done it since he was born, recording all of the fun coos, crying, laughing, etc.. Now that he's older I have him say the words he knows on the tape. My goal is to have the tape last until he's old, at least elementary school, so we'll have a great recording of how his voice changed throughout the years.

Happy Friendship Day to both my Peanut and Shell! Been having a great time w/ this give and receive concept. It's good personal growth work for me to receive as this is sometimes a challenge for me so I'm grateful to be giving as well as receiving.

I've had such a grand time shopping and finding tidbits here and there for my "Peanut", who knew the energy would be so much fun?!?! Can't WAIT to for you to open your goodies!! Thanks for your patience, it's been a crazy few weeks.

Jessica... thanks for the additional thoughts about Scrap-Journaling... or whatever I end up calling it. I LOVE the idea of tape recording the kids and am only sad I haven't done it all along. Great idea!

Stacie... in answer to the question you posed earlier about keepsakes that are three dimensional or that take up a bit more space. Yes, I do store them in the treasure box as well and will continue to until space runs out.

For example.. I have kept many of Ricky's t-shirts from sports teams, school, camp, etc... Right now they are in his treasure box. Eventually, I might be forced to get a separate plastic tub to place them all in, as eventually I would like them to be a quilt.

Matthew and Jack have their in their treasure boxes the outfits they wore home from the hospital, each of their first pair of shoes, and a few other things. It is conceivable that one dimensional things will go in one box (inside the folders) and that other keepsakes will be kept in another.

In terms of folders. I'm not fancy about it, so I just use the plastic folders you can buy at Office Depot, Staples or Target. I am sure there are probably more elaborate versions.

Although this started almost two months ago, my best friend, Julie, gave me a friendship journal. Claudia posted about this a while back, but starting one with you best bud would be a great way to celebrate National Friendship Day!

This peanut/shell thing has me all over the place...in a good way. Loving the stuff so far!

To my peanut...Brian,
I haven't forgotten about you. Another fun treat is heading your way...be on the lookout.

Love,
Shell

A fun idea for your treasure box just occurred to me. At a cute store in Southlake (TX) called Learning Express, they sell a literal "treasure box". IT's plastic and comes in a few different colors, and is pretty big. I'd say 2 ft long maybe, I'm not sure how deep.. I'm not good at size. I think it would be a good size for these journals and treasures. THe best part is, they do FREE personalization if you buy it there. So my niece got one as a gift that said "Elizabeth's dress up" painted on it, then all over was decorated with little dress up pictures, with paint. SO you could get one that said "Jack's Treasure" and then have them decorate it however you want, pirate theme, sports, or just the name. SO CUTE!

Shell, thank you for the recipes. i will probably start off with "easy enchiladas". Both of my boys like anything to do tacos, tortillas, and enchiladas.

Jessica... I love the idea of the "treasure box," personalized at Learning Express. Since I live near the store, I might even do it this weekend.

Also... to whoever is Layne's peanut... recipes... what a clever idea!
