New Shoes and Number Two Pencils

Important Give Away announcement at the end...

Welcome back from the Olympics and a final congratulations to Cheryl, Cassie, and Peggy for earning the gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively.  Not to mention... the coveted patches for their jeans.  Patches should arrive with Amy and Alden, Highlowaha's very own dedicated and talented Olympic correspondents (who, by now, have hopefully landed safely in CA).
 Highlowaha Decathlon Medal Ceremony

Onward and upward.  Time to move on to the next outlet for our creativity.

The start of school.  Aahhhh...  fall is in the air, even though it's 90+ degrees in Dallas.  TODAY marks the first day of school for all the schools in our district.  A special shout-out to Anthony, my handsome nephew who, today, embarks on the first day of his entire schooling experience... kindergarten.  He's all set up with the perfect Hulk back pack and all the essential school supplies guaranteed to make him an "A" student.

Weeks ago I introduced you to Nan, my very special neighbor who personifies c*r*e*a*t*i*v*i*t*y!  One afternoon, apropos of I don't know what, Nan told me about one of her many family traditions.  She explained that each year on the first day of school, she places a special table cloth over her kitchen table.  A simple gesture designed to help build the anticipation and excitement that comes with a new school year.  Don't you remember this feeling as a kid?  New clothes, new school supplies, and a totally clean slate.   Oooohhh, the excitement of it all.

I loved the idea from the moment I heard it.  I knew immediately I needed a table cloth.  Imitation is the greatest form of flattery and Nan was about to receive a Whopping compliment from me - her admiring neighbor.  I was unabashedly going to copy her idea.  Problem.  How would I, the not-so-talented-Claudia, get a table cloth?  I'm only an idea spotter.  I'm don't have the talent or the skill to make any of this stuff happen.

In walks Christi - seamstress extraordinaire - and close friend to my sister in-law.  Cassie suggested I give Christi a call to see if she might work with me to sew my very own back-to-school-soon-to-be-family-heirloom-tablecloth.  Kat, if you're out there... yes, this was going to be MY attempt at learning to sew (a skill we both agreed we wanted to learn).  I purchased all the fixins and Christi agreed to help.  Long story short... through the grace of Christy, I have my table cloth, though I am not a single stitch closer to knowing how to sew than I was before this whole episode started.  Suffice it to say, it's far easier for a pro like Christi to sew when she doesn't have a sub-novice hanging around her neck like an albatross.
I have big plans for my new favorite belonging.  Today, a beautiful tablecloth marking the beginning of a new Beeny tradition.  But over time... over time... a warm and subtle reminder of an annual right of passage.  Our childhoods are made up of only 13 (counting kindergarten) first days of school and yet, those 13 days, and all the emotion that goes along with them, somehow represents so much more!  A table cloth for only 13 days of the year?  Impractical, I know.  But, isn't a table cloth only viewed on rare occasion part of what makes it feel extra special?  I think so (I love the table cloth so much, I might have to concede to the first week of school).  I hope to add over time, a small framed collection of their annual school pictures somehow woven into a centerpiece.  I imagine it being a short stroll down memory lane.

One more small note about the first day of school then a question... then you're outta here.

I recently saw in a catalog an idea for First Day of School Cones.  The idea originated in Germany.  Parents give their children giant paper cones filled with school supplies, small gifts, and candy.  I refused to order their $68.00 cones from the catalog, but decided I could probably improvise and make a much scaled down version.  My version... made of card stock in about 4 minutes and yes, still filled with school supplies.  My makeshift cone is also smaller (which ultimately means less expensive to fill).
Now a question for the day...  What is your favorite memory of "back to school" from when you were a kid?  As for me... First, our annual family trip to the Bass Shoe Outlet for new school shoes and, second... lining all our school supplies up on the desks in our bedroom and starring and talking about them for hours.

Your turn.

Oooohhhhh.... have I mentioned I am going to GIVE AWAY a second Back To School Family Heirloom Tablecloth, hand crafted by the very talented Christi?  Yes, I am.  One week from today (Monday, September 1).  You didn't think I was going to get on my blog and brag about my great new family heirloom and then leave you hanging.  Did you?  Hopefully you know me better than that, by now.  To be in the drawing to win the tablecloth, you must make sure I have in my possession, BY SATURDAY, August 30 (should be mailed by Wednesday, a.m.), the following:
  • A minimum of one Make Your Mark paragraph from you, to be used in our Make Your Mark campaign and,
  • A minimum of one recommendation for a teacher who you think ought to receive one of our Random Acts.  No submission... no chance of winning.  And trust me when I tell you... kids or no kids, you will want this table cloth.  It would make a spectacular gift or... hang on to it until you have your own family.
As added incentive... collect five paragraphs (and the accompanying $5.00) and earn a Patchwork Patch.  Don't know what I'm talking about?  Check out the posts from August 5 and August 7.

Montana, are you still out there?

Signing off until tomorrow...

ITS AN EXCITING MONDAY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY!

To everyone's children: I wish them nothing but the best of success as they start school, and I also hope this year is full of many exciting memories and chalked full of life long lessons!

Katie starts grad school today ... congrats Katie :)

I start my first day at my new job today!

My favorite 2 memories of the first day of school (and they are both from the same year):

1. Mom's traditional "first day of school" picture. I was starting second grade, and my sister was starting first. My Mom managed to cut some of my head off, centering my sister's head in the picture! We still laugh about this!

2. Lunch time of the same day. My friend Jaime said to me, Julie, isn't that your sister over there. I look over, and much to my surprise my sister managed to stand up on the cafeteria chair, frantically waving to me. It was her first day in the building, and we had a storm that day, and had lost power for a little bit in the morning. She said she just wanted to say hi to her big sister!

HAPPY MONDAY TO ALL!!!

Philly = T minus 12 days!!

My favorite memory of the first day of school was "breakfast"! Yes you read it right!!!!! My mom being only 17 yrs older than me and working 12 hr shifts through the night never made breakfast during the weekdays. It was cold cereal or starve... On the first day of school she always made a big breakfast. My brothers could have cared less but I loved it.

Claudia..... I never realized how different our childhoods were until recently. You have justified my need for "THERAPY" LOL.

Do the 4 "Make Your Mark" stories already count todays challenge? I will mail you a teacher RAK nomination letter......

My favorite memory was going to the closest mall (120 miles away) and shopping for clothes. I also loved the new school supplies...Trapper Keepers ruled in the day! It was also fun in Jr. High and High School to decorate our lockers with Teen Beat magazine hunks! Aaah...John Stamos!
I can send you a bunch of teachers for RAK but I'll only send two for right now...let me know later if you need more! I'll email the info
to you.

The only memory I have, currently, was how excited I was to start high school. (We were 10th-12th... no freshman like ds's school)

Really, it's what I wore to school... I had pink high waisted pants, and a short sleeve blouse with button tab straps (matching pink and white) and some platform wedge shoes... I think they were an orange suede! Hey it was 1979... I had gotten contacs over the summer and thought I looked so cool with my feathered shag!

Check out my blog to see the annual picture I take of my kids! It's ds today... Sissy doesn't start school until Wednesday.

I have 2 favorite back to school memories:
1. That day you wait for all summer- the drive up to the school to look at the class list and see who your teacher will be, or in high school waiting for your class list to arrive in the mail. Oh the anticipation!! I always loved that day because it made the school year come to life knowing who my teacher would be.
2. SCHOOL SUPPLY SHOPPING! I didn't so much enjoy going shopping for them because most of the time my brothers just wanted to get out of there and I think my mother wanted to kill the three of us (plus, it probably pained her just seeing the $ fly by!). The part I enjoyed the most was going home that night and laying it all out. Then, spending the next few days rearranging it all in my backpack a million times. Mainly, I just wanted to look at them and play with them! I still have that fascination and will be going school supply shopping later this afternoon...yes, I'm in graduate school and I'm still allowing myself to go school supply shopping. There's nothing in the world like new pens, new binders, new pencils, new high-liters, etc.

You all have already covered my favorite so I will just second or third it...

S*H*O*P*P*I*N*G!!!

Two of my favorite things: New lothes; and new school supplies that are in my eyes- craft supplies.

I think I may have been the only mom at BC Elem this morning kicking my kids out at the curb!

My favorite part of going back to school is being able to see all my friends. Being in private school my friends dont live in my community so I dont get to see them often during the summer. I also love to see who my "big brother and big sister" is in school. Our school has 12th graders that are assigned to our homeroom. They are there to make HS life simpler. They are so great. We miss them so much when they go off to college. The email us and let us know how they are doing.

Oh yeah and our school has ice cream for lunch on the first day of school... Its soft serve! I cant wait until next Tuesday... I love going back to school!

As for new clothes... I love getting my new uniforms and blazer. I know it sounds abnormal but wearing uniforms makes mornings soooo much easier. It's a no brainer! If you knew me in the mornings you would say it's a blessing:)

Like everyone has already mentioned, the school shopping was the best! I remember wanting to wear my new warm fall clothes for the first day of school which is of course at the end of August! I don't think I was alone in the sweltering heat though. I also likes getting all of my art supplies all organized in my pencil box the night before the first day. I'm sorry your first sewing project didn't go quite as planned. I hope to get the fabric for my project this wekeend.

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Kat... in the end my sewing project went better than planned. It's just that I had nothing to do with it. Christi has promised a one-on-one tutorial, making something small and easy.

Send your paragraph and maybe you can win. You;ll love having it when your son begins school.

yes Montana is still checking in and reading your blog! I can relate to many of these same memories and feelings of that first day of school.

Also a fun note...today I officially began my scrap journaling! Since I am a Planner Pad addict, I am never able to use the University issued planners that I receive every year! Well, I decided to put my first JMU planner to good use- starting my scrap journaling! 2 entries already- one for our tubing trip yesterday and one for my first day of classes today! Just thought I'd share!

YES! I love it, Katie! Think of all the fun you will have filling it with fun anecdotes, pictures, tickets, and other chatchka you accumulate along the way.

By the way... tell your mother she won the authentic t-shirt from China. This is a big deal. Either she has ducked out of highlowaha.com for a few days or she doesn't get the enormity of receiving such a fun treat!

Katie said...

My guess is that she has ducked out for a few days. School started back up last week for so I know she's been on overload as far as work is concerned. I'll be sure to inform her!!! Nevertheless, I'm PUMPED for her!

Sorry I have been on the site for awhile. I am very excited about winning the T-shirt from China. I guess if you miss a couple of days you miss alot. I have been working alot and also working on the christmas project with Brian and Maureen. Will try and stay more in touch.

Sue... good to hear from you. Hard to know who Back To School is harder on... students or parents and supporting staff! If I was a betting person, I'd say the latter.

Congrats on your fun shirt. Once Alden gets settled and sends it my way, I'll pass it along to you.

Good luck with the start of school.

Claudia!! So glad you copied my idea...didn't it start the day out nice?? As Matthew and I visited before school this morning, we remembered bus shaped pancakes one year and then our dog boarding the bus with him on many occasions of his first year in Kidergarten. The bus driver even had a great laugh over that one....we lived on a little island where everything seemed a bit simpler. I plan to enter this contest......my little table square needs to be updated!!! My favorite memory is getting the new Buster Brown shoes and having my foot measured by the big machine you put your foot into and all four sides come in to meet your foot to give an exact measurement of width and size....I can still smell the shoe leather in the store!!! Ha!! Have a great 2008-09 school year, everyone!!!
