Welcome and Come on In...

At this point in the night, we've gathered, maybe had a cocktail, socialized, eaten dinner, and now we're sitting down to share a cup of coffee and laugh over our fortunes.  What does your say, by the way?

Mine?  Oh, let me tell you.  It's right here...

"Keep your feet on the ground even though friends flatter you."

And the rest of my family?...

Richard: "Face any problem with dignity."
Ricky: "Be careful!  Bees with honey in their mouths have stings in their tails."
Matthew: "You were born with a 'sixth sense' and superb insight."
Jack: "Soon you will be sitting on the top of the world."

(P.S.  These will be glued into the boys' scrap-journals as great keepsakes of tonight.)

Ha Ha, Maureen.  Very funny.  Yes, I know.  I know the whole thing about adding "in bed" to whatever your fortune reads.  It's still prime time though and families are tuned in, so we'll refrain.

Don't be shy.  Share your fortune with us and maybe even tell us how you think it applies to what's going on in your life right now.  So curious am I to hear your fortunes, I have a prize to offer up.  Post your fortune and have everybody else at your dinner party post theirs.  Each of your names will automatically be included in a drawing for a...

$40.00 gift certificate to P.F. Chang's China Bistro.
and SO delicious is their Lettuce Wrap appetizer, I'll throw in a free appetizer too!
(Thanks to Missy at P.F. Changs for the donations)

The winner will be announced tomorrow morning.

Say "Cheese."  What kind of dinner party would this be if we didn't take some photos?  Take a second and snap a picture of you with your family or friends.  Send it to me via email (cbeeny@lslog.com) and tomorrow I'll post them all so you can see who else showed up at our virtual dinner party.

Get to the point?  Is that what you said, Heather?  I know, I know.  I did say I would make announcement about Highlowaha's Next Big Event.  Heather - our competitive friend - has been chomping at the bit since she first read the words... "10 Events, 10 Winners; 1 Champion!"

So what is it I have to announce?  What next big event do I have in store for highlowaha?  Are you ready?  I need some build up... a drum roll... something.  Thanks J.B. and Drew.  I figured I could at least count on Cheryl's sons to make some noise.  Here we go... J.B.  and Drew, you drum roll, while I scroll down and lift the veil covering my announcement.  Ready?  One, two, three...

I had Hawaii Five O for dinner...mix of crab, shrimp, chicken, beef, and vegetable in a brown sauce. Yum!

My fortune says: You find beauty in ordinary things, do not lose this ability.

My husband had pineapple shrimp and his fortune says: The first step to better times is to imagine them.

He, however, aborted the olympics to watch pre-season football. Go Steelers! I must say though, he gave up the HD tv for my viewing pleasure.

Sorry to jump the gun earlier...great minds think alike I guess!

Here are our fortunes again:

Mine: Humor usually works at the moment of awkwardness. (I'm usually the funny one of the group and always chime in when it's awkward or things aren't "happy". No, not always appropriate, but I usually get a laugh!)

Treye: Don't forget to do good deeds as you accumulate wealth. (He just got a new, higher paying job...maybe it's telling him to remember those that are less fortunate!? We'll see how this plays out.)

The extra one we got: A vivid and creative mind is just one of your many great attributes. (As I said earlier, this is HLAs fortune...and so true about all of you. I read your posts every day and you are all creative...def a serious attribute of all of you!)

I can only imagine. I am going away to "Hershey and Lancaster" from Sunday until Thursday so I am bringing my daughters laptop so I can check in and see whats going on.

Hey why did Bush clap and smile for Iraq?? I better stop now! I want to keep it family oriented LOL!

My fortune: A long term goal will soon be achieved.

Extra fortune for Maureen's crew: A pleasant surprise is in store for you.

Jayme---boooooo Steelers, go Brownies!

Oh, my yummy crabmeat rangoons and fried rice w/ chicken was good...

My fortune: "Buy things because you need them, not because they're on sale."

I had shrimp with candied walnuts, and my fortune says, "A great man never ignores the simplicity of a child." So very pertinent, given the fact that my five-month-old, Lucian, fell asleep in my lap during our little dinner party.

Hmmm - right now the goal I'm focusing on is completing the 17 banners I volunteered to make (yes, 17) in the next two weeks. But that's not long term, so I'll have to think a little harder.

JAYME football without HD that is painful... kudos to your husband what a display of love he just showed you (Im not kidding)

Tera...those are fightin' words ;)

Aren't you too new to the area to like them already?!?!

Cheryl Houston said...

My fortune said People willingly believe what they wish. JB's said Ivestigate new possibilities with friends. Now is the time. Drew's cookie didn't have a fortune in it.

JB just left me saying, I don't care if I miss this part. It's taking too long.

HA!

I didn't get a fortune because Daddy didn't think to ask for one for me. But I expect mine would be something along the lines of, "Expect teeth in the near future."

p.s. I can't type yet, so I asked Mom to do it for me.

My fortune is "You are strong and brave." This is happily received as this year's crop of new students will soon descend on my campus and I'm not feeling quite ready for them!

Maureen... need I remind you that there was a time when people - of all things - had to watch football on a black and white t.v... and even get up to change the channel, heaven forbid!

Melanie. Seventeen banners, fourteen days. Hmmm... that's more than one a day. I assume you are using the word, "volunteer" loosely.

I found a fortune online that I like:
He who laughs at himself never runs out of things to laugh at.

i'm still kicking my butt that i didn't make the connection that the olympics and my RA Training started on the same day. I could have had an olympic-themed training!

oh well.

Just a good luck to all the student affairs folks out there who prepare to welcome students and student leaders back to their campuses.

Heather I love your fotunes!

Anonymous said...

Maureen...it was a HUGE shock to me. I'm sure there is something in it for him--I just don't know what it is yet. Haha!

I ate mongolian beef and my fortune is "Big journeys begin with a single step." It is pertinent in my life because I am learning to break things up into smaller chunks of goals so that I can focus on a larger goal sometimes faroff.

Jayme...I grew up a Browns fan. My home town of Erie is just 90 minutes away. I also went to college in Cleveland. Can't say I jumped on the bandwagon, because the Browns just aren't good enough to have a bandwagon.

I'll stay true to my brown & orange...even though those are gross colors!

I'm off to go spend time with Treye...I haven't seen him all week. Thanks for the dinner date, everyone. Have a wonderful weeked!

Anonymous said...

Jayme, better you than me, it's a great debt to have to pay back. haha lol

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Chris... me too. I am a mongolian beef LOVER! I hope yours was a good as mine.

Peggy said...

Oh my gosh... you guys need to give me the rules up front... I had to dig through the garbage and only found two of the three fortunes for the 4 of us:

You love peace.

You have a potential urge and the ablility for accomplishments.

No pictures either... since we are on central time and ate over two hours ago... the table is cleared.
I'll take pictures of the take out bag and the messy sink!

While watching in the past hour I made a quilt in ds high school colors, so when we sit during football and hockey games, we're warm and part of school spirit!!

Cheryl Houston said...

I had Mongolian Beef, too! What a smart crowd we are!

Anonymous said...

I forgot to say one was mine and one was Bal's get us both in on the drawing please!!!!

Also, I sure hope this decathalon is full of REAL competitions...I can't handle too many more of these get your name in and just hope it is drawn kind of events...the competitor in me doesn't like not having ultimate control over my fate.

Can I use a virtual fortune for Lily?

If so hers is "Strength is built upon inner character"...I like that one for her...I hope she has lots of strength and lots of inner character.

Alright all you highlowaha Olympians...I'm off to bed, I can't take much more action tonight.

Anonymous said...

Tera...I wasn't ever sure who people from Erie cheered for. I guess that makes sense.

Let's be friends except on game days, shall we? Haha!

eknoxuk said...

USA, USA, USA
I look forward to diving, swimming and gymnastics!!

Brian K. Root said...

People in Erie could rightfully root for Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or Buffalo.

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

The USA looked great. In an effort not to be ethnocentric, we stuck around to watch up through Ireland. Now it's off to bed. I have Olympic games to prepare.

Thanks for participating everyone. It was a fun way to spend the evening.

Goodnight to all of you who decided to get some sleep. Its 11 PM and I plan on watching the rest are there any other HLA friends staying with me??

Cheryl Houston said...

Maureen,

We're still up but not for much longer. :)

Anonymous said...

I may not make it.... I am getting tired and have so much to do tomorrow before I go away....

Its 11:20 I will say goodnight at 11:30

Cheryl Houston said...

omg! My favorite part was definetly the torch lighting!!!

Anonymous said...

Loved the torch lighting!! Now I'm off to bed at midnight-o-one, EST!

Thanks for the fun party!

Anonymous said...

Jayme...ok, it's a deal. We'll be friends!

My favorite part was the little kid walking in with Yao Ming. What an inspiring story! The torch lighting was also cool.

Katie said...

Okay, so, I'm just back from a meeting with the other HD's and it's time for me to watch my tape recorded Opening Ceremony! Who sleeps?! Certainly not grad students!!!

Julie said...

I'm back as well.

First of all, Jayme and b.k.root - I may be Tera's best friend, BUT GO STEELERS!! And yes, Ter - just because you grew up in Erie doesn't default you to a Browns (cough, cough) fan.

My dinner: I ordered General Tso's like I said earlier, however, I ate Orange Chicken. Good thing I like both of them ... they must have given me the wrong order.

AND, I asked specifically to make sure I had a fortune cookie, which again says:
You will be blessed with longevity.
Since I'm just starting a career, I'm thinking that means I'll be working for awhile :)

Fortune cookie question: what's the order for eating the cookie and reading the fortune?

Mine: Break cookie in half. Eat one half. Eat second half. Read Chinese word. Read fortune!

Thank you all for a fabulous dinner party! It's after midnight on the east coast and I'm heading to bed.

I missed the foot prints for the teams ... I'll have to re-watch what I missed ... it's recorded!

Katie said...

Oh and THANKS, Julie for sharing your fortune with me!!!

You're welcome, KATIE :)
