Name That Tune

Decathlon standings and other announcements at the end... except this one...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM.  I LOVE YOU!!!

What an exciting weekend of Olympic activity!  My family and I went to a dinner party on Saturday night, but we were home and perfectly positioned in front of our t.v. by 9:55 when Phelps made history by winning his eighth gold medal of the games.

We had a big week on Highlowaha last week, launching our very own Olympics chock full of challenge and creativity.  We kicked the week off testing wit, by having readers complete a caption-less cartoon.  Tuesday we introduced the ChampionCHIP bake-off (to be judged THIS Thursday).  Wednesday you worked with Yin and Yang to invent a craft project; Thursday we tested principles of Feng Shui by creating something from a toilet paper roll; and Friday our ability to get creative with letters was tested as you readers competed in an Olympic game of Boggle.  Things will heat up this week as we try to find out exactly how creative, resourceful, and tenacious our readers really are.  Hopefully all of you - especially our Highlowaha decathletes - are rested up and ready to compete in another fun-filled week.

Day #6
Name That Tune

Today we will test your creativity with music and lyrics.  I'm in the market for a Highlowaha jingle and I believe you can help.

Using the tune from the Beach Boys song, Kokomo, write a jingle about Highlowaha.  Submissions should be posted by 10:00 p.m.  Below is a music video of the song.

Un-sportsmen Like  Trivia Question of the Day:
In an unusual turn of events a female gymnast scored "0"  in an event last night.  Which event and why?

Announcements:
  • Decathlon Standings:  Once again, proof that it's anyone's game.  After Thursday's event Heather was in last place, but after placing FIRST PLACE in Boggle, Heather is now in 5th place.  Congratulations Heather.  Special thanks to Cassie P.  and Ashlee for competing in Friday's event, even though you are no longer competing as decathletes.
Stacie: 19.8
Cheryl: 21.1
Cassie: 23.6
Brian: 29.4
Heather: 30.5
Jayme: 31.8
Tera: 32.3
Julie: 34.5
Kat: 34.7
Peggy: 35.8
AZLori: 36.0
  • Taste of USA Trip to Philly:  So far our participant list consists of: Claudia, Cheryl, Amy, Katie and her two new fun friends from James Madison, Tera, Treye, Julie, and Heidi.  I'm feeling hopeful about Jayme who has convinced her husband to visit family in Philly that weekend - and Maureen who will either bring her daughters AND/OR Layne (another fun reader!).  This is shaping up to be a big crowd.  My task for today is to determine a reasonable hotel close to Temple University where we will hold our fun day of activity.  What we do know is things will get underway at 10:30 and wrap up around 4:00.  That... and, of course, that it will be a FUN, FUN day!
  • Make Your Mark: NO MAIL for me this weekend!  Our goal is to have all letters in hand by this Friday, August 22.  Later this afternoon I will mail 70 postcards to people I know soliciting their inspiring letter.  Who can you ask for a letter?  Remember... collect 5 letters from people you know (along with $5.00 per letter) and earn a patch for your highlowaha jeans!  Want to pass the instructions along to someone?  Check out the post from August 5 (Now I've Gone and Done It).

Russian gymnast Anna Pavlova got a 0 on her second vault after starting while the red light was still lit instead of waiting for the green to go.
On another note about this same event I was of course rooting on American Alicia Sacramone but also the 33 year old German who managed to pull out a silver (though I thought she should have taken gold over the North Korean who stepped out of bounds on both of her vaults).

Stacie,
Glad to see you got your packages. Was the last a big purple mess. I've been thinking that I should have shipped in a box instead.

I thought it might be interesting to share a few of the winning words from Friday's Boggle game. These were some of the only words remaining... not submitted by more than one person (they have all been looked up in an Oxford Dictionary to assure they are English words):

stroud
tuss
duress
arse
tpgs
togs
sera
hirsute
hest
usher
duet
desert
urate

Pretty smart group of readers we have.

Hi all!

I've been internet-less for the past few days as I'm in the process of moving. The cable/internet guy will be at my place on Wednesday afternoon to get me going again. It's crazy how attached to those two things I am. I'm at the library right now trying to get things taken care of for the day.

Since I missed the Peanut/Shell guessing game, I'll guess now. All along I thought it was Cassie P...but then I realized she wasn't even playing. So, my stab in the dark is.......Kat?

Dr. B - will you reveal all of the pairs?

Kat said...

Nope, sorry Tera, I was Layne's shell! I was guessing that you were mine, but if you weren't here on Saturday then you couldn't have been the Anonymous poster... Hmmm...
Today is really going to stretch my creativity. I am not great at writing song lyrics. Be prepared for cheesiness! Ha ha!

Another one bites the dust....sadly, I have to drop out of the Olympics.

I had a big party over the weekend and spent multiples days preparing for it. I put off my baking until today when all was said and done. Unfortunately, I have 2 appts. today that I totally forgot about (thank goodness for reminder calls) and a 3rd that my principal called unexpectedly. I will never be able to bake and make it to the post office in time.

Good luck to the rest of you!!! I'll be the cheering section and participate when I can.

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Oooohhhhh... sorry to hear you have to drop out, Jayme.

Don't forget, you could throw a few frozen Nestle Toll House cookies in a box and stay in the game! To be the winning decathlete, you don't have to place first in any event. You just have to place high enough in the majority of them.

i missed you guys this weekend while i was away for my bday. for the curious ones, my parents ended up taking me to vegas!! it was great...

YAY, go heather! you arent on the bottom anymore! keep climbing!!

im no good at writing song lyrics, so ill not even try since im already out of the competition. but the boggle game was fun; im glad i got to do that one!!

HAHA, tera, you thought i was your peanut or shell (whatever one it is, im so confused after reading everyone's guesses; but im curious of who they all were)! i didnt participate because it was goin to be too difficult when i was travelling so much the past month!

glad to be back in on the HLA action!

PS- cheryl, last week you asked me to e-mail you... i did, but havent seen a response. im curious as to why you asked me to e-mail you. in case you didnt get it, my e-mail address is cpatterson02@bellarmine.edu

Cassie P-

I never got your email. I was going to solicit you in private to be my cheering section but then you declared Heather as your favorite. I like cheering for the underdog too so I completely understand (though Heather is not really an underdog because she ruled in Boggle and I'm sure her band experience will come in handy in today's challenge!)

Then Katie stepped up and said she would cheer for me so I have a cheerleader anyway! LOL!

I'm glad you had a great birthday in Vegas! WOW! Nice parents! And, Happy Belated birthday.

HEIDI.. I posted my peanut/shell yesterday because I have vertigo and was not feeling up to sitting at the computer. As for todays answer I guess thats over with LOL as for a jingle I have the words to Kocomo if anyone wants I will email/fax them but I am not feeling well enough to write anything worth reading. I hope everyone has a great day!

I have one question thats been bothering me.... Are the Chinese women gymnasts truly of age? They look younger than my 10 yr old daughter who happens to look babyish next to her friends.. I cant believe how young they look.

Katie said...

GO, CHERYL, GO! Knowing your love for music, I have full faith that you will do well in this competition!

It's 12:22 and aside from having Kokomo stuck in my head ALL day I haven't made any progress on my song...looks like I'll be utilizing my drive home to start coming up with some lyrics.

Good luck everyone, I hope you are having an easier time at this than I.

Ok, are we supposed to rewrite the whole song or just the beginning? And should we post it or email it? This is fun, but wow is it hard!

Anonymous said...

SORRY CHERYL!!! :-( I can root for you next time! but...

COME ON HEATHER!!

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Kat,

No, you don't have to re-write the WHOLE song. A portion of it will do fine, as most jingles are not long.

Jayme... one more push to keep you in the game. Mail a box of Chips Ahoy if you need to. Any entry keeps you in the game.

Also, as a matter of interest... Peggy mailed her package on Saturday and it arrived today. I think you still have time.

Cheryl Houston said...

Oh, do we get extra points for re-writing the whole song?

Post or email?

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

One more note! I just want to go on the record for saying... Peggy is a COOL peanut!!!!

Today I got my final treat in the mail from her. It was a pair of knitted slippers!!!!! Can you believe it? How cute. AND, as if this fun treat wasn't good enough, the slippers are in one of my favorite colors (brown) and the handmade card (and poem) accompanying the package was beautiful. Truly... a complete package! And that coming from someone who LOVES packages!

Thanks, Peggy.

On the Peanut and Shell note. A number of people have asked me to post who had who. I will wait until Thursday. By that time all Peanuts and Shells should have had ample time to reveal.

Peggy said...

Wow! Claudia.... I guess I stuffed your mailbox! Yay! I think you got everything from me now. I wish I could have been a more secretive peanut... but I just couldn't figure out how to do it... thinking that you would have known since you picked my name (not knowing that Richard picked them)

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

As I mentioned earlier, Peggy... your beautiful cards would have been a dead giveaway anyway. Trust me when I tell you, I was NOT suffering!
