Last Licks

Matthew and Rick getting their last licks!

Oooohhhhh... the bummer of it all.  Today marks the last day of July... the official end of National Ice cream month!  True, true... I don't limit my consumption of ice cream to the month of July, but still, it was such convenient rationale.

Give me something to look forward to.  Today we'll bring closure to National Ice Cream Month by looking ahead and dreaming up the future of ice cream.  Concoct a flavor so good, so yummy that come Wednesday, July 1, 2009, my ice cream maker and I will be ready to roll.  Tonight my family and I will vote on the flavor we are most excited to taste and the winner will receive a "Beeny Favorite" ice cream accessory.

Now you.  What creative activity will you engage in to celebrate the last hours of this day?  Take a colleague for ice cream over lunch hour?  Hold a contest guessing the number of licks required to eat a popsicle?  Surprise a neighbor with a gift certificate to a local ice cream shop?  Or how about kill two birds with one stone, by celebrating the end of National Ice Cream Month AND Christmas in July and treating your family to a Dairy Queen BLIZZARD!

Now from one of my vices to one of Richard's vices....
The advertisement above appears in the August edition of Bon Appetit.  Maybe you can help me and Richard settle a score.  We have differing opinions about the advertisement's challenge to identify five differences between the bottles.  Tell us what you think (Incidentally, this is the first month a picture of the bottle has ever been featured in one of their ads.  Up to this point the advertisements have simply been black words on a white page).

We'll sign off for today.  I want you to start resting and gathering energy.  One week from today is the eve of something BIG!

I guess one bottle is full and one is empty.

The eve of something big - could it be an event so large that 5 rings interlaced together represent it?

And I'm thinking about an ice cream concoction ... without of course ... nuts!

I'm sorry to post again ... but I tried adding a picture to my profile, and I want to see if it shows up.

Oh fabulous - it worked :)

For those of you wondering ... my hand is covered in wedding cake frosting. Tera and Treye decided to nicely feed each other a bite of their wedding cake, and then "attack" their maid-of-honor and best man :) Needless to say, I caught her hand mid-air and this is the result :)

Oh darn! I love this kind of stuff and I'm headed off to the river. I'd like to see the ad in person.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I tried to play the bottle game but I can't click on them to get a better look.

Cladia, I'm kind of thinking of a new flavored ice cream - cocoaNUTS-
Vanilla ice cream flavored with cocoa RUM and then mixed with lots and lots of walNUTs. Anything with nuts is good for me. As for Dairy Queen we do not have one here on Long Island. I wish there was one my son David loves Dairy Queen. Whenever we go on one of our road trips outside of New York we have to stop at a Dairy Queen. So, if anyone out there knows if there are any Dairy Queens in the New York City area or even on the Island please let me know. Thanks.

Claudia, I am sorry that I for get the "u" in your name.

I'll respond first to the Ketel One add. I think it is brilliant...why? Well clearly it has been a topic of conversation in your house. It has all of us looking at the ad and wishing we could see it in person to pick out the 5 differences. So I, a person who doesn't drink, am now talking about their brand name.
As far as ice cream flavors I'll have to ponder that one for a while.

okay I so didn't realize I put two d's in the word ad.
I really am not that bad.

OK I dragged the picture to iphoto and enlarged and printed it. It isn't coming across good its pretty blurry. I dont see what they think is different with the picture because it isn't obvious and the quality isn't good so I cant find it. Which leaves me bummed. I love trying to find the differences. Anyway as for am ice cream concoction I like Mocha Cappuccino biscotti,
Its coffee ice cream mixed with chocolate fudge or syrup and topped with broken biscotti pieces. Maybe isn't an all time favorite with the kids but its what I would want.

I agree with Heather that the ad is brilliant. I've spent about 15 minutes searching the internet trying to find the picture. My guess is that there are NO (zero) differences between the two pictures.

As for ice cream, I would love to have an apple & peach cobbler ice cream. Apple Pie is my favorite dessert, and I ABSOLUTELY love apple pie ice cream. Since that is already available, my "new" ice cream would just add peaches to apple pie ice cream.

Lastly, I want to say that I was much more successful at smashing cake on the best man than Tera was at hitting Julie.

I am always a fan of citrus in desserts. What about a strawberry ice cream with crushed lemon cookies?

I couldn't see the ad very well either. Although it did have me looking much more closely at a bottle of vodka then I normally would.

Well since you said it is the first time the bottle has been shown in the ad I think they are just trying to get you to study it...no differences but the public will scan it for quite awhile...maybe even scan while they are in a grocery/liquor store the next time. Then when they need to purchase a vodka that will probably be a brand they consider.
Ice cream.....vanilla with caramel, chocolate covered and plain waffle cone bits and pecans. Yummy!

OK seriously...i do not think there are any differences between those two bottles. the marketing department of that company is pretty smart. they simply want you to stare at the bottles looking for differences to get their company name stuck in your head; thus hopefully you will just go buy a bottle!

second, an ice cream flavor...anyone who knows me pretty well knows I LOVE ICE CREAM! i have done my best this past month to eat ice cream as many days as i can. i didnt get every day, but i came pretty close im sure. my mom and i are ice cream freaks. when i was in ice school, we would sit down and watch our prime-time shows on tv with a bowl of ice cream together. it was so much fun. since then, and three years of college (and two of nursing school) under my belt, i have such a crazy schedule im not home every night or im too busy studying or writing a paper. BUT my mom, has also decided in the past few years that eating ice cream every night keeps those 5 pounds on that she hates...so no more nightly ice cream tradition for us. ice cream isnt a constant in our freezer anymore; and i have to beg her to buy it now! LOL...anyways! my ice cream flavor. seeing as you all are adding nuts to your flavors, im gonna steer clear of it (for more than the reason that a lot of you are using them!). i was thinking about making my favorite starbucks drink (peppermint mocha frapp) into ice cream, but im not sure the boys in the beeny house would like coffee flavored ice cream. SO how about:
chocolate ice cream with pieces of brownie, chocolate chips, and coconut mixed in!
i would call it Chocolate Masterpiece! hehe. hopefully the Beenys like chocolate...

HAHA, i wrote "ice school" instead of "high school"...i told you i like ICE cream!

Interesting entries today, on both fronts! I'm loving the ice cream flavors proposed so far and can't wait to present them to the Beeny boys tonight.

As far as the ad goes... I will share our difference of opinion tomorrow.

Brian... I could have sworn you posted your email address somewhere. Could you send it to me, so I can include you in the email discussions about the holiday service project.

While I'm at it... I'm still in search of a mailing address for artnme. Anybody, anybody? Patrick... where are you?

I think the bottle on the right is shorter.

Font is different on bottle to the left. Smaller I think? That's all I can see with this blurry pic.

I'm a Peanut Butter fanatic when it comes to ice cream... so my Ice cream flavor shall be just that, PB FANATIC.

It will be a vanilla base ice cream with reeses pieces, butterfinger, and real peanut butter all concocted into one SCRUMPTIOUS ice cream.

kat, i like your ice cream flavor... it sounds so refreshing!

Brian K. Root said...

ooh, kat, what about lemon zest instead of cookies... or both?

hmmm...

something big, huh?! how exciting ;)

Kat said...

Brian- I love lemon, so I would do both! Great idea!

I have two options:
One would be for Richard: Ice Cream Maker's Mark (vanilla ice cream with chunks of bourbon balls mixed in) For an extra kick he could add in a little Maker's Mark straight up.

The other for the Beeny boys and Claudia: Candy apple
Mix Vanilla ice cream with apple pie filling in your ice cream maker and then drizzle with hot caramel...YUMMO!!!

ohhh Brian, you are a man after my own heart. I LOVE peanutbutter. My favorite ice cream would be peanut butter ice cream with crushed oreos!

Claudia - Patrick is just settling into a new place & I know things are picking up for him at work. I'll e-mail him for his new addy and forward it on to you.

Julie - LOVE the picture.
Treye - Good Luck next week!

My ice cream.
Has anyone every had a Carvel cake?
Homemade cream with tons of those chocolate things in it. Crunchy and yummy!

Claudia the girls received the package you sent and are loving you. I am loving you for the compliment. Thanks so much!!!!

Ok now for the Vodka, I think there isn't anything different with the bottles. I think its Ketel One's way of stating they havent changed in all these years. You cant perfect "perfection" not that I drink Vodka and when I do its "Grey Goose". Until today I have NEVER heard of Ketel One....

Someone had amaretto-something flavored yogurt at lunch today. Naturally I immediately thought of making that into an ice cream flavor. Yum :)

"chocoholic almond" ice cream.
chocolate ice cream with extra hersheys syrup in the mix with chocolate chips and slivered almonds and chocolate sprinkles on top, doesn't sound to bad right about now.

In an attempt to find the Ketel One ad I went to Bon Appetit's website and found a great article for today's ice cream topic. Check it out, some of their suggestions sound YUMMO!

What about a fuzzy navel-flavored ice cream? Orange sherbet ice cream with peach pie filling swirled into it? Or peach ice cream with an orange compote of some sort to put on top? Or how about a buckeye brownie ice cream? Chocolate with chunks of brownies and peanut butter balls mixed in (or just the buckeyes if that sounds too rich). Yummers.

And yes, I realize you can't have peanut butter anything, Claudia, so that option probably wouldn't make it into a contest... but it still sounds yummy.
