Day #7
The Incredible Edible Discus

The seventh event of the Decathlon is the Discus Throw.  The event is designed to test an athlete's arm strength, by requiring him to throw - with accuracy - a disc weighing 4 pounds, 7 ounces.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.  That's all well and good, but we're not about sheer strength of body.  No.  No.  We are creathletes... as concerned about the strength of mind and creativity as we are about strength of body.  Yes, we want be strong and healthy, but primarily so we can execute on the countless number of creative ideas generated here at highlowaha.

So I'll test arm strength and raise those decathletes... imagination.

Today's event...

Flex those scissor cutting biceps and forearms.  Stretch those glue applying triceps. And, get ready to prepare for National Cream Filled Donut Day.  Your task is to design - inside and out - a greeting card to be presented to a fellow highlowaha reader on Sunday, September 14.  Cards will be judged not only on design, but also on the quality of caption inside.

You will do two things with the cards.  First, scan and email me the front of your card, along with the caption (by 10:00 p.m., as usual).  Second.  Mail the hard copy of your card to me at Claudia Beeny, 4012 Harvestwood Court, Grapevine, Texas, 76051.  Cards must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, August 20.

Un-Sportsmen-Like Trivia Question of the Day:
What unexpected fan was spotted in the stands watching Nastia perform her uneven bar routine?

Announcements:
  • Christmas Service Project:  Sue, Maureen, and Brian are closing voting booths at end of day today.  Go to top right hand side of my blog and click on Helping Hand.  Cast a quick vote, by posting, to let them know if you would prefer to collect items for an agency or a family.  We must make our final decision this week.
  • Make Your Mark: Today I mailed 75 postcards soliciting teacher stories from friends and family.  Have you written yours yet?

9 sold packages; 91 more to go!
Have you mailed your story yet?

Signing off until tomorrow...

Cassie - I am your peanut and loved sending you the gifts and cards. I'm so happy that you and your family enjoyed the treats. Even though the Peanut and Shell game is over, you are still on my "send fun treats" list. I hope our paths will cross someday. Perhaps in Philly?

AZLori - WOW! How GREAT are you?! I received three of your creative packages last evening and was overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you for being my peanut and showering me with such thoughtful presents.

Nastia's mother was in the stands yesterday. Her nerves usually keep her away.

Good job, Susan. You are correct.

Also... nice knowing you are out there.

Claudia,
A few questions....is the card supposed to be about/centered around the cream filled donut day? and can we email a picture and the caption? I do not have a scanner....

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Lori and others...

Yes. The point of the card is to be in celebration of National Cream Filled Donut Day.

Also, you may certainly email me a picture of the card in the event you don't have a scanner.

Thanks for the questions.

All the silence is deafening. How about letting me know you're out there by telling me your favorite kind of donut.

Mine? Either chocolate glazed or cream filled... Bavarian cream.

Oh oh!! when you don't really ask questions in your post, you have us doing a task... we're busy thinking!!

I love the donuts rolled in chopped peanuts, yum-O!

Cheryl -

You guessed correctly! It's me...not Treye. He was too busy to play the peanut/shell game!

Cheryl Houston said...

Claudia- the pressure is on! This is what Peggy DOES!!! My boss just walked by my desk and asked what I was drawing. Well, isn't it obviously a cream filled donut? I hope I don't get fired today.

I'm a classic glazed (or no glazed) donut fan. No sprinkles. No icing. No filling. No chocolate.

Cheryl Houston said...

Tera- when Claudia posted who was playing I totally knew it was you!! :) Is anyone else from Erie?

Can't wait to see you in PA!

Peggy said...

Bite me!!!
(I'm a cream filled donut)

Cheryl -

Yeah, I sucked at disgusing myself. Oh well! At least you got some fun things out of it all!

Can't wait to see you either. Treye, Julie and I are road-tripping together. I can't wait to travel with my bestest...it's been way too long since I've spent quality time with her!

YAY PHILLY!

My favorite doughnut is a munchkin...LOVE Munchkin Monday!

Julie said...

Peggy, I agree with you ... no questions in the post = not much to comment on ... especially when card making is involved.

Favorite type of donut = Tim Horton's version of a Munchkin = Tim Bit.

Either a regular donut or a Tim Bit of chocolate glazed or sour cream glazed.

Oh! I love a little sugar donut! And when I eat them, I usually love 3 or 4 of them at a time!!!

When I was a kids, my mom would take me to 7-11 and I would get the six-pack of LSD and a Pepsi (or a Coke) for breakfast!

Aw- the good ole days!

I just experienced one of the coolest things EVER! Claudia must be out running errands because I just tried to call and tell her about it...but I'll tell you all instead!

It is called a cricut and it's like a computerized ellison cutter. One of my RA's moms has one and she just brought it to her for us to use...I'm in awe! They apparently sell them at Michael's, but I've never seen one before! You insert a computerized piece (like you used to do with old Nintendo 64 games) and then select which shape, object, letter font, etc. you want, insert the paper you want it cut out of, press cut and there it goes...cutting away! It was the coolest 30 seconds EVER...I just sat there in awe!

Check it out!!!

Cheryl,
i'm slightly disturbed that your Mom let you get LSD for breakfast as a kid.
When I was growing up we were told to "just say no"!

Cheryl Houston said...

Heather-

I know. Pre-packaged little sugar donuts or peanut butter crackers and a soda for breakfast. I'm surprised she didn't have CPS called on her.

Julie said...

Cheryl ... the LSD concerned me as well ... but Heather - the thought that you were concerned about LSD only as a child for breakfast concerns me too!

Katie - great story ... I'll have to check it out!

Julie,
You know what they say about judicial officers.

cpsgradstudent.... my daughter has cricut!!!1 She does some really amazing things with it. We are doing some of her Sweet 16 stuff with it. She has done some amazing presentations at school and school projects. Have fun with it its addicting!!!!!!

My favorite doughnuts are bavarian cream or boston cream unless its ST. Joseph's pastry (doughnut filled with cannoli cream and topped with powdered sugar)

LSD in the morning and PCP at night (gotta love that mom LOL)

Being on weight watchers means I wont be celebrating national doughnut day but I will send a card!!

Peggy said...

Cricuts are like $249.00 and then more for the dies/programs you get. Michaels wont take coupons for them... they are BIG in the scrapbooking/card making world... I don't have one... since I'm a frugal card maker and don't fall into peer pressure!

Anonymous said...

Call it what you will.... its worth every penny and for the grades my kids have received on their projects it has been priceless. Besides the money it saves buying cards and scrapbooking stuff it is well worth it. I got it for her for Christmas last year and as for the cartridges you can get them really cheap at A.C. Moore and WalMart which sells both the unit and the cartridges.
If you are willing to lay out the extra cash it is a great gadget to have. I dont even have to buy cards or gift tags it makes everything.. Claudia would love it!!!

Shell!!! I arrived home exhausted from a very stressful day to see not one, but TWO packages for me! Seriously, everything is so perfect! I have been thinking recently that I need a autumn decoration for the front door instead of just putting up my Halloween one early and leaving it up late. You are too sweet. And I love the calendars! Maybe thanks to them I will have a more organized 2009.

With 36 minutes to spare my card pictures are in CKB's mailbox...who else competed today?

Julie said...

Heather, I just sent mine ... with 19 minutes to spare!

I have a cross stitch that I made myself awhile ago ... "If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done." LOL

Cheryl Houston said...

Heather-

I sent mine over at 8:40 and I just finished baking my baked goods. Whew, what a day!

I competed today... barely made it in time, but I did.

I enjoy chocolate donut holes from Dunkin Donuts.
