Decathlon Day #10: Record Time

The ChampionCHIP Bake-off had me up later than normal.  The lack of sleep is my excuse for any and all typos you find today.

You will be happy to know the treats were a hit  and judges left feeling sufficiently guilty about all the calories they consumed.  Ballots are in and votes have been tallied.  The results from Bullseye and the ChampionCHIP Bake-off have been calculated and are posted below.  Points from Haiku You and today's event will be tallied and then factored into the decathletes final scores.  The winner of the gold, silver, and bronze medals will be announced tomorrow.

Congratulations in advance to all the decathletes who were able to stick it out and make it to the final day.  I realize, in retrospect, what a big commitment this has been on your part.  I thank everyone for indulging me and participating - whether it be as a decathlete or a spectator.  Brian, a special note to you.  Your cookies did not arrive in the mail yesterday, so you did not have an entry for the ChampionCHIP Bake-off.  I am keeping on the decathlete roster, hoping your cookies show up today.  If so, I will keep you in the decathlon, but I will have to assign you nine points (total number of decathletes still standing).

Announcements and Decathlon Standings at the end.

Now onto today's big event.

Day # 10
1500 Meters, Record Time

Today's event is about stamina.  Just like the decathletes who, after competing vigorously in 9 other events, must dig deep to compete in a 1500 meter run - so too must you dig deep.

Today is not so much about running 1500 meters in record time.  No.  This day is about re-cording time (long e, not short).  Fifteen times during the course of this day, decathletes must arrange to make a post in the comment section of Highlowaha.  Details below.

Each decathlete begins with 15 points (think of them as hurdles).  Your goal is to "clear" as many hurdles as possible.  Each time you "clear" a hurdle you LOSE a point.  Clear all fifteen hurdles and end the day with zero points added to your final score.

Now the big question?  How do you "clear" a hurdle?  Decathletes clear a hurdle by making a post in the comment section of today's blog, between the hour and the fifteen minute mark.  Here's what this will look like.  Sally Jane (a good neutral name) might make her first post at 7:10 (remember, posts must be within the first 15 minutes of the hour - in this case the 7:00 hour).  Sally Jane might make a second post at 8:07; then 9:12; 10:04; 11: 13; 12:00; 1:02; and on and on until she has made her fifteenth post.

What should your post say?  Your post should indicate where you are and what you are doing at that moment.  This way, we get to learn more about how many of you spend your days.

Hopefully that is clear.  One post per hour, between the hour and the fifteen minute mark, for 15 hours.  Hurdles can be cleared between 7:00 a.m. and midnight YOUR local time (this will level the playing field for AZLori who's on the west coast)!

Good luck and see you on the other side.

Unsportsmen-Like Trivia Question of the Day:
Olympic athlete, Rogers, spent five figures and one and a half years building what in his backyard?

Announcements:
Bullseye: Julie did, in fact, find a Montanan to post during yesterday's challenge.  Alice S., her native Montanan, is not computer savvy enough to know how to make a post on a blog, but she did send an email.  As someone who understands computer illiteracy FIRST HAND, I have decided to count Alice's submission.
Helping Hand:  Votes are in and we are just waiting to hear from our fearless leaders about (1) the outcome and (2) next steps.
Reading Raynbows: Don't forget to check in with today's Book Club discussion, based on Pausch's book, The Last Lecture.

Decathlon Standings After Bullseye Event:
Cheryl: 27.2
Cassie: 33.1
Heather: 41.3
Peggy: 43.1
Tera: 47.3
Kat: 47.5
Julie: 49.6
AZLori: 51.1
Brian: 52.9

Decathlon Standings After ChampionCHIP Bake-off

Cheryl: 32.9
Cassie: 35.4
Heather: 47.6
Peggy: 48.9
Kat: 50.5
Tera: 51.6

6:00amCST I'm not usually up yet but the anticipation of today's event has made me rise early.

I realize we haven't started yet but this whole event has been so much fun I couldn't resist.

Lori! You are up early today!

Anonymous said...

Cheryl...Is Lori up early or late?

I'm bummed that the 6am hour doesn't count as my first post is typically at this time.

I guess I'll just have to leave for work a few minutes late so I can get in the 7am and hope I arrive at work just on time so I can get the 8am...gosh this is going to throw my schedule for a loop today.

So even though we haven't yet started...what am I doing right now? Sitting in a COMPLETELY silent house (sans the hum of the ceiling fan overhead). Soaking in the last few minutes of silence before the chaos of the day begins.
Typically I wake up just before 6...feed the cats and come in to sit in the dark on the computer and check into HLA. I try to be off the computer by 6:15 and heading to the shower so that at 6:30 I can wake up my husband. By 6:45 we are both showered and getting dressed, typically I'm getting Lily up at this point and dressing her too. Around 7am we are out the door and off to daycare.

See you guys at 7am!

Anonymous said...

Cheryl...looks like all the east coasters missed their first chance to post...come on HLA...up and at em'!

Claudia,

Just to clarify, does midnight to 12:15am count or is it over at midnight.

Julie said...

I'm posting on the top of the 8:00 hour. As some of you know, I'm home this week, and my sister, brother-in-law, and 5 mo old niece are heading out the door to go fishing!

I hope I'm back in time to post by 11:15 ... as I think that will give me my 15 posts at the end of the day.

Needless to say ... we're going fishing ... I hope I have a good report in a few hours!

Julie said...

SHOOT!!

It is 7:01 am and I just bumped my hubby off the computer so I could post my requisite 7am entry...I'm getting ready to head out the door to daycare but I have to get our bags together first...See you at 8!

Cheryl Houston said...

My computer says 7:01am.

I am just about ready to go to work but I need to wake the boys up and get them ready to go. Usually, I'm still getting ready at this time.

The 8:00 hour will be questionable but we'll see how it goes.

My computer clock says 7:02am now. Just testing that.

Anonymous said...

Do the hours need to be consecutive?

Anonymous said...

If it's consecutive then I'm here getting my family ready for our day.

Anonymous said...

Now after rereading I think I get the game so never mind my earlier post.

Cheryl Houston said...

I just dropped the boys off at school and normally I would just leave from there to go to work in Uptown Dallas.

Unless the traffic God's clear 183 and I35, I'm officially a little late but my boss runs marathons so I can hear his competitive nature saying, "Do what you need to do."

It's 8:01am CST and I just crossed my 2nd hurdle.

Anonymous said...

It's 9:02 am according to my computer. I just got up and plan on laying around for a little bit. I've got a long day of cleaning and unpacking ahead of me...ugh...and am going to put it off as long as possible.

Peggy said...

What am I doing at 8 am Central time... still sitting in my jams checking emails, updating my blog, and seeing what's going on here. This is my first hurdle for the day. I think I'm going back to bed... one kid is in the cave (basement watching tv) and the other still sleeping... I'm exhausted from visiting family and friends in Wisconsin yesterday... I'll back to bed and think about the day ahead!!

Anonymous said...

Here making something for the kids.

8:11 am and making it in just under the wire. I have just finished talking with our administrative assistant about a procedural issue in the office and will be heading over to Mike K (my boss and HLA reader) to run something past him.

PS I'm jealous of all of you in your pajamas still!!!

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Cassie (or Cassandra)... the goal is 15 hurdles over a span of 17 hours.

Also, Cheryl... you posed the question about 12:00 or 12:15. Making your final post at 12:15 is fine.

Peggy said...

Okay, I didn't go back to bed to ponder... started a load of laundry instead. My next hurdle... going for a 3-4 mile walk with my neighbor... well maybe it will have to be 3 so I can be back in hour to get over my next hurdle.

Cheryl Houston said...

Well, the traffic Gods were not that nice but my lead foot and superior driving got me to the parking garage at exactly 8:33am. I have delivered the papers, made coffee and checked email. My desk is looking pretty clean today and Mr. Marathon is out of town. I predict a quiet day here at the office.

I am wondering if watching the clock and anticipating the next hour is going to make it a long or short day... We shall see.

In all my hour counting this morning I forgot to congratulate Cassie on winning the ChampionCHIP challenge! Way to go, Cassie! I was also thinking as I swirled down the parking garage: I bet the judges are glad that we didn't have 21 contestants stay in the game!!!

It's officially 9:01am CST and I just crossed my 3rd hurdle.

Anonymous said...

Just getting the kids ready to go.

I just finished couting out 150 business cards to distribute to new faculty at their orientation today and am trying to schedule hearing officers for a slew of cases that are on my desk.
I also need to ask my administrative asst. if she will order something for my desk to organize all these folders.

It's 10:03. Hurdle #2.

Still bummin' around the apartment putting off cleaning/unpacking the kitchen. So many wedding gifts and no where to put them all!

Got a call from my mom that said a friend got killed on his motorcycle last night by a drunk driver. Not a good way to start your day. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers today.

Tera, I'm so sorry to hear that...my thoughts are with everyone.

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

FYI...

I received an email from AZLori who works at a school. Their internet is set up such that outside internet access is limited. She can not pull my blog up from her school. She has asked if sending me emails will count and I said, "yes."

Okay, hurdle 3... just finished my walk... I think we only got 2 miles in... looks like rain and I was worried about the ticking clock of my computer...sounds boring... me!

Oh well, off to shower land.

Cheryl Houston said...

Tera, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. Accidents like that are just so sad. My thoughts are with you and his family.

Not much going on over here today. Answering tons of solicitor calls this morning. Boss #2 had his car broken into last night so fielding calls for him.

It's 10:02am CST and this is my 4th hurdle.

I'm wishing I had an iPhone or Blackberry today. You know, just in case. :)

Anonymous said...

It is 10:00am and i'm already jumping my 4th hurdle for the day.
i'm wrapping up prep for a 10:30 meeting with all new faculty to discuss scholastic dishonesty (fun stuff!)

So, suit jacket on, I'll be heading to the ladies room to touch up my lipstick and I'm off...but have no fear I'll be back in time to post for the 11:00 hour!

I just thought for the fun of it, I'd let everyone know what I'm up to at this current hour.

I am currently sitting in my apartment listening to the official USA Olympic soundtrack for 2008 (isn't it great, Cheryl?!) and waiting for 11:20 to roll around. I'm having lunch with my staff today at that time...I'll check back in later today as I have nothing going on until around 1 am this morning..oh the life of a res lifer!

Not that I NEED to post anymore, but just wanted to check in. Lucian's in his pack n' play fiddling around with his rattle and practicing his rolling over skills, and I'm about to go grab a snack from the kitchen, then maybe throw a load of diapers into the washer--assuming L doesn't get bored and fussy before then.

Way to go with your bake-off win, Cassie! I LOVE eclairs and can only imagine that chocolate chips make them that much more delicious.

CKB, are you going to post photos of any of the previous decathlon entries? I'm dying to see what people made!

Let's see. I've just been answering the phone and surfing the internet. Trying to decide what's for lunch and remembering to pick up my dry cleaning. Monday will be tough if I don't.

About to go pick up some Chinese food for lunch.

Just finished "building" a cabinet for our living room.

Peggy said...

My 4th hurdle... In the last hour I saved Monday by picking up the dry cleaning. I picked up a Subway sandwich and while standing in line I decide I will never date a man that wears crocs. I witness a man nearly get his hand cut off saving the elevator for me and I enjoyed my lunch with the Sudoku puzzle.

It's 12:05pm CST and I'm back at my desk crossing my 6th hurdle.

PS. Katie, the Propel is excellent! Enjoying one now to keep me going for the day. The CD... I have yet to listen to yet. The boys were a handful last night and when I popped it in the car the morning my player wouldn't recognize it. POS!!! I will try it at home tonight in my computer as I'm sure I will need it for my pm stretch. :) Thanks again.

Cheryl,
If you keep up this speed you'll be done before too late of an hour.

On a different note was the guy who saved the elevator cute? Clearly he thought you were worth losing a hand over.

Katie said...

Well, it's currently 1:36 here and I just got back from visiting a HD friend in another hall on campus. (she's one of the girls coming to Philly!!)

Now, I'm sitting in my apartment checking the room condition forms that all my residents have turned in and filing them in the system. Plus, I'm listening to the amazing marching band practice in the field outside of my building.

So yesterday was obviously a tough day if you read my haiku...Lily was a disaster from the moment we walked in the door. Today however was a different story this morning.
So my high today would have been:

No more diapers soon!

Just thought you'd all want to know about Lily's potty training fun!

LOL! I call it "Elevator Chivalry" here in my building. It's really funny watching the men around here. They hang back and let all the women in or out of the elevator first. When they are standing at the front of the elevator and it opens. They'll exit but they'll stop and hold the door for all the ladies to exit.

But that doesn't answer your question. Yes, he was an attractive, much younger man than I. He works at the bank and I can guarantee there were no sparks thrown from either direction. And though I thought his hand was doomed, he probably holds those elevators a lot and has no fear.

I just had a nice conversation with Boss #2 about his grand children and the discipline issues we face as parents.

It's 1:00pm CST and this is my 7th hurdle. And yes Heather, I plan to finish todays challenge as soon as possible though I'm in it for the long haul. :)

Julie said...

Let me pose this question ... those of you at work - what do you do? It'll give you something to write about ... and it'll give us all something to read :) I know many of you know each other - but I don't so much know you guys!

Well, Julie, since you asked, I'm unemployed. It's great for now...but once all this cleaning/unpacking is done, I'm going to be bored. Just incase you didn't know what I did ;)

Just a small update on my current activity...I'm so confused as to why Bank of America won't take my call. I guess if they don't want my call, then I don't really want to give them my business anyway! Ahh, banking!

As for my job- I'm a hall director in a building of 250 freshman. I'm in charge of supervising 9 resident advisers and coordinating the upkeep of the building and the well-being of the residents! Basically, a lot of paperwork, no sleep, but a TON of fun and great relationships!

4:00 and Lucian is having his FIRST nap of the day. OK, not entirely true. He slept for about five minutes earlier today, but I can barely count that. In spite of how completely out of character this is for him, he has been pretty easy today, playing a lot and generally happy overall, even during my shower, which is usually a nightmare if he's not asleep. Still a lot to handle without any me time, so I MUST go get something to eat while I can. I'd like a smoothie, but am a little nervous the blender will wake him. Wish me luck!

Okay, now that the car is parked and everyone is inside safe and sound... that was hilarious. We finished up with our new teachers and I saw that it was 6:10 so we rushed to the car and carefully drove through the neighborhood and I RAN in the house to post that last hurdle. LOL.

Boo...I got stuck in convocation with no way to post for THREE hours!!! seriously I missed 4, 5 and 6.
But now I'm home and plan on finishing out the night so hopefully I still have a chance at bronze...I sure hope I did well on that haiku.

I've been trying to get Lily to be happy since I arrived home; she's cranky again and Daddy got shampoo in her eyes during her bath so that isn't helping. I'll probably put her to sleep in a few minutes.

The boys are watching the Cowboy game. I'm reading emails waiting for 8:00.

It's 8:00. This is my 14th hurdle.

It is 8pm and I am crossing hurdle #10.

Lily is sound asleep, Bal has eaten and I just found out that one of my best friends is going to be in Dallas on business the week of September 23rd and she said she'll be staying right next to the DFW airport and wanted to know if that was close enough for us to meet up...HELLO!!! we are right around the corner!!! Woohoo!

I love it when things work out.
So now I'm off to get myself something to eat as the guacamole at the reception was good but certainly not enough for a dinner.

I've got a long night ahead of me to get as many of my points away as possible.

Having an ice cream party out front.

Keep your eyes open!

Cool Heather. Thanks for giving us heads up.

Finally finished eating some spaghetti for dinner about half an hour ago... a late one for us because Lucian had kind of a rough evening. He's finally asleep and should stay that way except for waking to nurse a couple of times.

And now I'm trying to figure out what to do with the next couple of hours before I crash. I'll probably end up watching some more Olympics, but I'm tempted to go to Barnes & Noble and buy the books for two different book clubs I'm in (not including this one). I did receive _The Last Lecture_ on cd as a gift last weekend. Though I generally prefer reading to listening, perhaps I can make an exception this time. Good luck, everyone! Go, Cassie, go!

HURDLE #14

So, I may have lied a bit an hour ago ... I never made it to bed.

I was looking at maps with my parents for this reason: I'm moving Sunday to a new town, and my Dad is familiar with this town ... his brother (my uncle and aunt) live there. So, we pulled up mapquest and he was "showing" me around.

Now I'm in bed watching some diving!

Tera - I can't help but ask ... the way you worded your last comment - did you buy the curtains today, or your bedroom ;) LOVE YOU!

Melanie - You're pulling all the weight for the two of us right now - I'm sorry! You are doing fabulous ... and all the questions were really good.

For anyone who wants to know - PHILLY in 2 weeks!!!!

Is anyone else nervous watching these dives ... of the divers hitting their heads? (If anyone knows anyone who has gotten hurt diving, I'm sorry!!)

Hurdle #15 - Yay! Am I at the finish line? Today has been quite the challenge to be home and post a comment every hour. I am very thankful to be home with my children on their last day of 'summer' vacation. Although I am doing the greatest job in the world... to document my entire day being home is always eye opening.

To all my competitors... I wish you good luck and kudos, this has been a great Highlowaha Olympic event. I bid you goodnight!!!

And, great job to everyone whether you were in one or all ten events what a fun time this was.

What time are you going to bed Katie? You're young. You can stay up all night. If you log in again please cheer on Lori for me. :)
