Happy National...

Candy Corn Day!
October 30, 2008
I'll celebrate National Candy Corn Day, because this 100+ year old candy deserves a little respect.  It has, after all, been around since the 1880's and remained unchanged since its inception.  I'm no candy expert, but that seems worthy of boasting.  I must also admit, there are few other candies so recognizable and so closely associated with the Halloween holiday.  One search through Google's revealed close to 450,000 candy corn images.  Look at all the ways candy corn has been adapted and celebrated as an iconic symbol of fall and of Halloween.

There was more.  Tutu's earrings, witch hats, candles, napkin rings, baby rattles, t-shirts, belts, t-shirts, tote bags, necklaces, sculptures, and on it went for 450,000 images!

But, the truth is I'm not totally feeling the Candy Corn celebration.  I'm not feeling it, because to me candy corn tastes a little like wax.  Visually, I give the candy a 10.  It's perfect in size, color, and shape.  But taste matters when you're coughing up calories for candy.  It'd be a hard sell to get me to give up my Whoppers or Special Dark Hershey bars for a serving of candy corn (even if candy corn is only 3.57 calories per kernel).

When I was a kid and we returned home after trick or treating, we would spread all our candy out on the living room floor and start sorting through it.  Gum in one pile, lollipops in another, chocolate in a third, tootsie rolls and other chewy candy in yet another, and then there was the "...and that" pile.  That was all the candy we we were willing to trade or, better yet... give away!  Candy corn was in my "And That" pile.

How about you?

Are you in or not when it comes to candy corn?

I had a thought...  What if all the Highlowaha readers who feel like I do about Candy Corn agreed to award one lucky Highlowaha Candy Corn Lover with all the candy corn acquired on Halloween night?  Wouldn't that be fun?  Let's do it.

Tell us, thumbs up or thumbs down on candy corn and give a signal as to whether or not you would be willing to send yours or to be the recipient.

One more thing.  I don't want to be a kill joy just because I don't love candy corn, so... if you have a favorite candy corn story, recipe, craft, or other adaptation, let us know.  I'm willing to go along for the ride.

Signing off until tomorrow...

I am not much of a candy corn person at all. Give me something chocolate!!! I would be willing to sent my candy corn to someone, if I even get any...

Candy Corn...blech!
Not a fan. I'll gladly cough up any that comes mine (or Lily's) way!

I did however, become slightly addicted to the mango flavored candy corn that Melanie had on her desk at work last year...that stuff was yummo.

Have a good day everyone...I'm late getting ready and have to run!

I started to carve a pumpkin
With my carving knife and scoop.
But the pumpkin got so scared
He took a little poop.
It looked so cute and funny
Just like a candy treat.
So I'm sharing it with you now
Because you're so sweet.

We put together little baggies with this note and Happy National Candy corn day AND filled with candy corns. Fun treat for our friends and neighbors.

Claudia and I have discussed this... Candy corn is not on this earth because of us. I can't even stand the smell of it. Of course my kids love it. I guess someone has to. I hear that there are some great baking recipes that involve melting them and using them in the ingredients.

HAPPY CANDY CORN DAY !!!!!

I like candy corn... not love it! I buy it for dd and me... and we grab little handfuls here and there... but after Halloween, when it's gone, we're done with it for another year... a tasty seasonal treat... just enough to make the taste buds go aaahhh... then we move on.

I agree with Peggy. I like candy corn, but I do not have a strong preference for it either! I'm much more of a skittles or starburst girl...plus anything with PB in it...mmmmm!

Just wanted to give an update:
I have pumpkin carving pictures from Cheryl, Julie, Cassie Y, and Kristen. If you still have a pumpkin carving picture you'd like to submit, just get it to me by 5 pm today! kkolkmeier@gmail.com

Candy Corn. I think it's a little addictive once you start eating it. Then, you feel kind of sick after you eat too much. I like it. I don't love it. We bought Cotton Candy flavor and some other random flavor one year. I like the original best. But yeah, it's not something I crave or have to have. Snickers or peanut butter cups or blow pops.

Now, I'm not sure I've professed my undieing (?) love for Cotton Candy. I love Cotton Candy!!!! But you don't really get any at Halloween. I guess because it would take too much room in the buckets.

While I, too, think Candy Corn is visually appealinga and synonomous with Halloween, the taste is just down-right nasty to me. I can't stand the smell of it either. Give me M & M's or Tootsie Rolls anyday.

CKB - I emailed you, but thought you may read here, too.

I need the Struble's address...I need to mail Treye's snack.

Oh, I like candy corn...but not after Halloween. It's only good when it's REALLY fresh.

So, the question is... if, so far, none of us love it and only a handful of us like it, why and how is it is such a popular Halloween treat?

I want that kind of good PR and press, while actually satisfying so few.

I'm still in search of the candy corn LOVER. Ask around at work, poll your neighbors, or email your friends. I want to get to the bottom of this.

Is there anybody out there who actually LOVES candy corn?

Okay, let me clarify. As an adult, I can take or leave it. But, as a kid! I ate it by the boat loads! I mean- it's pure sugar!!!

And that it why it is so important to Halloween- because I think most kids love it. At least until they throw it up. :) It's a life experience that everyone must have.

I have found someone! I sent out emails to my staff, the group I advise and a few others, and it turns out one of my RAs LOVES Candy Corn! I'll try to get her to post on here about her love.

I have now found another person who loves candy corn...Jane from my program! Who will be the first to post their love for candy corn?!

Whats orange and yellow and white all over? My favorite fall candy! I can probably eat my own weight in candy corn (though I probably shouldn't). The excess of sugar all at once makes me feel like a kid again. Gotta love candy corn!

I LOVE CANDY CORN! Well, I love the orange, white, and yellow candy corn - you can keep the one's with the brown bottom. If we are talking about traditional candy corn - send me what you don't want. When I eat candy corn I try to bite it perfectly at the color line so I eat 1/3 at a time. Sometimes I try to see if I can let it just dissolve in my mouth - talk about a sugar drip:) Candy corn stomach aches are just part of what goes along with being a fan. I guess you take the good with the bad. I can't wait until Nov. 1st when I can go buy Candy Corn at 50% off. Yummy!

Wow! Go Katie. Way to go. We have a small gathering of people in Virginia perhaps worthy of our candy corn stash.

Is there anyone else out there? Does anyone else want to duke Katie and her crew out for our Highlowaha Candy Corn stash?

Let us know before day's end!

I am a "liker" of candy corn for the holiday season, but by no means am I a "lover" of it ... however, pumpkin anything is fabulous!

I bet you could make some awesome crafts with candy corn.

I personally think candy corn is AMAZING! Not only is it fun and festive to look at, but it makes a great accessory, too - candy corn vampire fangs, anyone? I seriously cannot be the only one who does that!
We keep it around the house, and I have some at work, too - funny how it doesn't last long in either location!
At the faculty/staff appreciation luncheon last week, some parents made us yummy food, including take-away tubs of candy corn mixed with peanuts - supposedly it tastes like some kind of candy bar...I'm not wild about mixing the two. But something that IS fun to mix - my sister-in-law made candy corn jello shots for a Halloween party last weekend, and they were yummy delicious!
So, add me to the group of candy corn-lovers...Halloween just wouldn't be the same without them!

Candy corn is the best thing ever made for this season. The colors are cheerful. It may taste like wax, but it's DELICIOUS. So what if it's 3.(whatever) calories per kernel, I eat it from October through November, and I love every minute of it!

HAPPY CANDY CORN DAY

Candy corn + peanuts = payday

So funny... I remember trying to eat each color perfectly too! Bite, by tiny bite!! And the brown bottom candy corn, yuck!!! Also, fresh is best. Candy corn is just a staple in Americana History... and most people have eaten too much of it and puked!!! Everybody had great points!!!!

Julie,
I'm with you on the pumpkin! Maybe when you get to Az we can hit a bagel shop for a pumpkin bagel! Yum!
I like candy corn...kind of funny to know that candy is also seasonal...never really thought of it that way but there is candy corn, candy canes, cream eggs..anyone think of any other seasonal candy?

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Lori... my favorite candy of all time is seasonal. Cadbury eggs. They are chocolate on the inside and have a hard candy shell. I am allergic to peanuts, so peanut and regular m&ms are off limits.

These Cadbury eggs are what I imagine m&ms to taste like. Even though they sell them in small sized bags, Richard always loads me up with plenty of large sized bags.

I love them like I love Thin Mints!

Julie said...

Lori,
Count me in for a bagel shop stop for something pumpkin! :) :)

CKB...I knew we were friends for a reason...bonded over our mutual hate of candy corn and our mutual love of the Cadbury mini eggs...YUMMO!!!

Yes, those are definitely my favorite seasonal candy!

MIss you woman!
