Fall Fest: "F" is for...

FESTIVALS
Sponsored by the letter "F," today Highlowaha will continue our week-long celebration of our favorite things to love about fall.  Today we celebrate the great American tradition of fall festivals.

Check out the names of just a few of the festivals being hosted in towns around the country this month.
Pumpkin Festival
Fall Foliage Festival
Chowderfest
Oysterfest
Celtic Festival
Grapefest
Farm Fall Festival
New Yorker Festival
Fall Wine Festival
Balloon Festival
Great American Beer Festival
Harvest Festival
Jazz Festival
Wooly Worm Festival
Children's Film Festival
Medieval Festival
Fall Harvest and and Seafood Festival
Family Festival by the Sea
Maritime Festival
Folkart and Farm Festival
Wildwood Festival
Bellmorre Street Festival
Barktoberfest...

and, the object of our celebration today...

The Highlowaha Apple Festival!  When asked on Monday to share what words beginning with the letter "A" - other than acorn - conjured up fond fall memories, quite a few of you said "apples."

I figured today we could celebrate apples by sharing our favorite recipes, crafts, and other creative uses for the fruit.  Or, if you're all tapped out on ideas, but you want to share something with our fun highlowaha family, let us know your preference when it comes to apples... soft or hard, red or green, skin or no skin, etc...?

And, what kind of Highlowaha Apple Festival would this be if we didn't go...
BOBBING FOR APPLES
Highlowaha Style

Here's how it will work.  There are 41 apples to be retrieved.  Each person will pluck one apple from the tub, assigning it a number between 1-41.  Once an apple has been taken, it is no longer up for grabs.  There is a treat (or a BAD apple) associated with each number.  Post your number and discover treat hidden within your apple.  It would be a shame to have apples unclaimed, so let's see if we can get 41 people to play.

Signing off until tomorrow...

I'm bobbing for apple #15!

I don't think there's much I don't like about apples. I like red ones with skin to eat ... either empire or cortland are my favorite.

I'm a big fan of caramel dipping sauce as well!

And, I loved, as a kid at my grandma's, taking a bat and seeing how far my sister and I could hit the fallen crab apples into the field!

I like Granny Smith apples

And my grandma made this grade Waldorf salad but I don't know the recipe.

I will take apple #21!

I have fond memories about apples. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me up in the mountains of southern california where we live, to a place called Oak Glen. What did we do there, go apple picking! First we would pick our apples. Then I would beg for a pony ride and a caramel apple. I usually got both, since I lived with my mom and this was a special outing with my dad's family. I LOVED those caramel apples. Another fun part of that day was watching the men make apple cider from scratch. They would let us kids turn the grinding crank. It was cool.

And I think my favorite apples are the crucnchy red ones, with skin! Those are the kind we would pick at Oak Glen, so I think those are still my favorite.

My number .... lucky #13!

How funny, I'm eating an apple for breakfast!! I'm apple (not ignorant, but I forget the term I'm looking for) clueless... an apple is an apple... although they have names and different colors and are grown in different parts of the country... I don't go out searching for a special kind, a must have MacIntosh, or Granny Smith etc ...
I like apple pie, apple crisps, dried apples, carmel apples with nuts, apple turnovers, apple pancakes, apples with peanut butter, apple juice, Apple Jacks, apple butter, apple slices in salads...
maybe after work I'll find my apple crisp recipe and post it!
Happy day y'all!

Darn. My number was taken. Gotta be fast around here. So, I'll take #39.

Carmel Apples- YUM!!, Apples and peanut butter but my favorite is Candied Apples from the fair!

I love Festivals. The comradery of it all. The sweet foods. The dinner food- barbecue, hamburgers, sausage on a stick or corn dogs! (i love food) The beer. The music. The funny contests. They're so much fun but really only truly fun when you can share them with friends. It's the one time of year I really want to bust out of loner status. :)

#14 for me please.

My favorite apples are Honey Crisps. They are the perfect blend of sweet and sour and are always crisp and juicy. Never soft and mushy.

One of my new favorite things to do with apples is to take an melon baller and scoop out little balls. Then you take sucker sticks and poke them through the side with the skin still on. Melt chocolate, peanut butter chips, white choc. chips, etc. and dip the apples in them. Then we add sprinkles or chopped nuts and have adorable little candy apples.

Cheryl Houston said...

Nicole that is very interesting... how many balls do you get per apple?

Apple #4 in honor of Bryson's 4th birthday!
Happy Birthday to Bryson!
Peggy, I got the cards last night!
Love them!

Anonymous said...

Depends on the size of the apple. But for a nice size apple, I think I get about 8-10 balls. The kids LOVE them. I made them for my son's b-day party at school Big hit.

Cheryl Houston said...

Claudia- you should try those apple balls on a stick and let me eat them. :D

Your apple, #23...

Great- I also am getting my Vegas prizes out in the mail- candy bar to Lori and $2.10 to Julie correct? Are we donating stickers to the house?

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Kelly... no stickers for the house. The house has enough stickers to cover the entire outside of... her house!

I will pick #3

I love Gala apples.

I love making apple pie filling and just cooking it and putting it on top of vanilla ice cream. I need to find out how many points it is on weight watchers. They have a tool online that if you give it all your ingredients it will tell you how many points per serving it is. Maybe I will do it tonight!

Claudia just to let you know WW is working great! Krysten lost 20 lbs and her Sweet 16 gown had to be re-ordered because it was too big. Melissa lost 13 lbs and so did I. Maybe one day the Peres girls will be skinny..... I will keep you posted.

Krysten said...

I will pick #19 thats is if it hasnt been taken yet:)

I love any apples... They have been my snack every night after dinner. I can never get sick of them.

melissa Rose said...

I will pick #41 , my favorite # was already taken and it was a bad apple so I am glad I didnt get to choose it. My favorite apples are Granny Smith. I like eating them when they are really cold and cut up.

Maureen, Apple #3, You win a sheet of stickers.

Krysten, Apple #19, Get your fortune read. Your fortune is... "You are offered the dream of a lifetime. Say 'Yes'".

Melissa Rose, Apple #41, You win a bookmark

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Richard, the lucky RAK box winner - on your behalf - is... Amy!

What number do you want to pick for her?

Brian K. Root said...

Apple #2 is for me.

I love Granny Smiths, but has anyone ever had those Pink Lady apples. I often find them in Giant Eagle grocery stores here in western PA.

Yesterday, I made Apple Crisp/Cobbler... I used a recipe from The Neelys (on Food Network). You can find the recipe on www.foodtv.com. It was pretty yummy.

Brian K. Root said...

I sent out my $2.10 and candy bar 2 days ago... I stopped at two stores looking for Reeses Pieces, and couldn't find them, so I sent M&Ms instead. Hope you don't mind.

Also, why does it feel like I'm committing a sin when I mail cash through the mail? It feels so so bad!

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

B.K. Root, Apple #2, In the spirit of Pirate Bingo, steal someone else's prize and let him/her pick a new one.

azlori said...

I pick apple number 9.....kind of close to 11...hope it's not a bad apple also!
Gala apples are my favorite and I LOVE carmel apples with pecans!

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Richard just called from his cell phone and said he wants to pick Apple #37 for Amy, the name picked from the RAK box on his behalf (because of what Apple #1 said).

Apple #37 says, "Receive a compliment from the person who posts next."

So, Amy... you should be receiving a compliment any minute now. Keep on reading...

Also, AZLori picked Apple #9. It says, "Pick another apple." I'll be waiting...

azlori said...

Amy was the best peanut ever! I had so much fun picking things out for her and sending her fun packages! Any student on her campus is lucky to know her I'm sure! Happy Fall Amy!

My new guess is 17! Jake's soccer uniform number....

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

AZLori... Apple #17. You are the recipient of one of next week's giveaways. Just you wait. It's going to be a fun week.

Cheryl Houston said...

Claudia-

You have 10 available but Tera picked #25 and received her the telling of her fortune.

Julie said...

b.k.root - I received my first $2.10 in the mail today ... and it was from you!!! THANK YOU!!

It took me a minute to figure out why something with a Pitt Greensburg envelope was in my mailbox ... since I'm in Pitt Bradford's back yard :)

Claudia, both of my boys are volunteering to work in a haunted house as a fundraiser for a little girl with cancer so they can send her to summer camp. The people who run it build around their own home and make it as a haunted house. It's amazing and both of my boys give up their night and help out for the cause. Davids has been doing this for 4 years and Christopher started last year. This is their RAK.

My RAK would be to tell those who do not know about this haunted house and have them go and feel like they are doing something good for a little girl and get a real scare and enjoy themselves for the evening.

People actually come out screaming and crying its hilarious.
Before the sun goes down they have the younger group (ages 5-8) go in for fun because it is far to haunted for them to go in after the sun goes down.

Chris said...

Claudia I will take #8 because Maureen told me to :) its her lucky number and we were both born on the 8th

Claudia @ Highlowaha said...

Chris... you'll be so happy to know you won a fall whole punch!

Anonymous said...

Wow, is it really bad that I don't want to steal anyone's prize?

But, Claudia says I get to do so, so I'm taking Peggy's inspirational quote apple.
