Today we embark on a new highlowaha adventure. Hopefully this will mark the first of many blog parties. After all, if you can meet and mingle with fun women while looking at Tupperware, shopping for new accessories, learning how to use power tools, or scrap booking, then surely we can host a fun party experience tailored to meet the creative interests of our guests.
This week's highlowaha party is compliments of host Heather S. Heather recently moved from Louisville to Texas (lucky me), leaving behind family, friends, students, and colleagues with whom she hopes to stay in touch. Her suggestion for this week's party topic is...
Simple, Inexpensive, and Creative Ways to Stay Connected
So that's what we'll do. This week I will offer a creative-idea-a-day (or two) about how you can keep networked with family, friends, and colleagues even when there are miles between you. New readers, you will quickly discover that the real beauty of this blog is not so much the idea I post each morning, but instead about the cumulative experience and creativity of our loyal and generous readers. Visit the "comment" section of each day's blog for enhancements to my idea or other thoughtful comments about the day's topic. Veteran readers, remember... I'm limited. Stay to the day's topic, so you don't cover my week's worth of ideas in the first eight minutes of the day.
Having said all of that, we're ready to go...
I've moved a bit myself. New York, Arizona, Georgia, Semester at Sea, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, back to Georgia, Kentucky, and now back to Texas. Lucky for me that, in each place I've lived, I have made (and then left behind) cherished friends. Therefore, I love and am always in search of good and easy ways to stay connected. The ideas I share today are two of my favorites.
First, postcards. I don't consider myself a "maven" (see post titled, 1-800-Maven Trap, April 9), but when it comes to these postcards I am. I tell everyone and anyone who will listen about their practicality. They are perfect for two reasons. Reason #1: They're postcards, so you're not obligated to write a lot. Let's face it. One of the reasons we don't stay in touch is because we are short on time. Postcards are perfect, because it's still personal (nothing is better than getting something in your mailbox), but does not require the same amount of time (or text) as a greeting card. Reason #2. The front of the postcard peels off, so that you can adhere a photograph. This is perfect, because not only are you sending a quick hello, but you are also sending an updated photograph.
Now is where I have to get a little fanatical. I know you've seen these before in camera shops or maybe at the counter of the photo studio at Target. Wherever you've seen them, they're not as good as the ones I'm talking about. It's like calendars. Not all calendars are created equal. Fine if you don't care, but if you want the perfect calendar then Planner Pads it is (see post titled, Behind Every Great Woman is a Planner Pad, March 10) and if you want the perfect picture postcards (easy to use, thick, etc...) then...
Kimac Company, Ltd.
3"x5" 100 = $14.50; 1000 = $130.00
4"x 6" 100 = $17.50; 1000 = $160.00
5"x7" 100 = $21.00; 1000 = $190.00
My friend Dawn uses these postcards as her annual Christmas letter. Family photo on front and clear label with limited text on the back. Voila, her Christmas card is done - cheaper than an actual card, and isn't arriving in July (at best), like my attempt at more elaborate Christmas update. I have, however, used these picture postcards as change of address announcements, save the date wedding announcements, baby announcements, and for a variety of other reasons. I like them more than the photo postcards you order at Walgreens or Sams, because they look more personal. Some of you have been recipients of one of my postcards, so feel free to give an endorsement in the comment section!!!!!
In fact, so excited am I about these postcards, I fully intend to give a stack away to one of our party guests. Party guests, here's what you have to do to get in the running. Either post your address in the comment section or send it to me in an email at cbeeny@lslog.com. Then check back tomorrow to find out what's next. Veteran readers, I haven't forgotten about you. Post a welcome to our guests and one of you will also receive a stack of the infamous Picture Postcards.
Onto my next favorite.
Mailing Labels. I give myself credit for this idea, though it is my good friend Katie who logistically makes it happen. I call this idea, "Begin with the end in mind." We all have an idea in our head of how often we would send mail if we were, "a really good friend." And, by the way, let's face it.... Some friends - depending upon how long and how well you know them - would get mail more frequently than others. For example, my parents. If I was really good, I would send my parents written mail at least once a month (phone calls weekly). Same with my friend Dawn and a variety of other people in my life. Other people might ideally be every two months. Still others might like to hear from me four times a year. Finally there are whole groups of contacts (former bosses, old neighbors, distant relatives) who would render me organized if they heard from me just twice a year.
I start the new year off with the end in mind. I (actually Katie) helps me develop mailing labels for all my contacts. My list of contacts is categorized by either 12 labels (monthly); 6 labels (bi-monthly); 4 labels (quarterly); or 2 labels (Christmas + birthday). If I have labels left over January 1 of the new year, then I have failed. It's real easy to see who you've done a good job keeping up with and who you've neglected. Again, create the labels at the start of the year and make it a goal to end the year with zero labels.
Discover the beauty of my Picture Postcards and using all your labels just became easier!
O.k. that will get us started for the week. I have lots more in store, so stay tuned.
Signing off until tomorrow...

Welcome to all of my fun friends!!!
Love you all and can't wait to Party with you guys all week long!
Welcome new readers!
Great ideas Claudia! Love the postcard idea. One way that I have found to stay connected (and I'm sure you younger readers already do this) is through Facebook. It has reconnected me with so many of my long lost pals. I'm totally addicted!
I love these postcards!! I was the lucky recipient of them a few summers ago and have loved using them every since! They were great when I was living abroad and I could send home pictures of my life there! They are still great now as I am living in Virginia and I can send pictures of my staff, my new home, and my new life here!
I love getting mail, but getting mail with a picture on it is even better! I agree, these postcards, make it seem so personal and from the heart! I love them!
As for the labels, you can download a template for your labels at http://www.avery.com. Select the kind of labels you have and download that template, type in the addresses, and you're ready to go!
I need ideas for staying in touch with people, so this is perfect!!
My dear friend Heather actually gave me a few of those wonderful postcards once. I think I actually have one left somewhere- I need to find it and use it. And of course I would love to have some more, because they are GREAT! Which means I must e-mail Dr. B my address!!!
PS blog-a-thon money will be on its way to you today dr. b! (sorry its late!).
Oh yeah, and welcome to all the party guests!!! I hope you'll become another great addition to our community!
I do love receiving the postcards from Claudia! Always fun pictures on them and definitely lets you know she is thinking of you. I like using instant messaging or even text messaging to stay in touch. My mom lives in NC and I'm in AZ and she works 2nd shift hours...instant messaging is an easy way for us to stay in touch. It can be a quick hi how are you or we can have a conversation..I will often text people just to say hi and let them know I am thinking of them.
this is a really sound idea.. I use it for 2 things... I keep an ongoing list for my Yule cards (so is I get sone from someone new, I add them to my label list) and for my pen pals (I have a few)... I type up their name and address (15 lables, 1/2 sheet per pen pal) and then keep them in a baggie w/postage... makes writing SO MUCH EASIER!
I have never heard of the postcard idea - but it sounds fabulous! I used to send my Grandmother a card for every city I had to travel to for business, but I never thought of sending them to family/friends on a regular basis. Also, it is a great way to show them what you have been up to with a picture they can hang on the fridge!
I may opt for Christmas postcards this year...I will have to credit your idea Claudia as I am sure they will be a hit and cheaper than ordering online and save with postage!
Hello everyone new and old!
I am fortunate enough to have my own faux greeting card company... I love to send out unsigned cards with a copied note inside... for them to re-send the card w/envelope provided on to another unsuspecting friend.
-or-
I am actually sending them the card and I often receive an email back how the 'thinking of them' really made their day.
Along with the creative greetings!! I send email teasers with a fun comment in the title line, so they have to write me back to find the answer!
And, I have a blog spot that I promote from time to time, friends and family can check in to see what we've been up to.
Most people I know are ashamed to admit that they don't keep in touch like they should, because they are so busy!! Oh well, can't change them all!
Hello all! Hi Laura! I hope you're doing well and married life is treating you well! We left your thank you picture with the presents up on the fridge forever and everyone thought that was a great idea!
Welcome to the HLA community, all! You'll love it here.
Claudia, I love these ideas!
I love the exchange of ideas that is already going on so early in the day. Keep your ideas coming, because I am furiously taking notes.
I have been the recipient of Peggy's get-a-card-send-a-card idea. I love it. First you receive mail and then you have a fun new card to send along to someone new. The other great thing about Peggy's cards is that are a good size. Not too big, but bigger than a postcard (when you have a little more to say). I just received a fun package in the mail from Peggy with one of her infamous cards enclosed. Check out her site at prdesigns@sbglobal.net.
Also, this news just in... Melanie was the winner of this week's Super bowl Snack Throw Down. From what I understand, both entries were Chex-mix-like. Maybe it was her green and yellow m&ms that swayed the judges in her favor. Check out the strublesuds blog to find out more details.
I LOVE the postcards as Christmas card idea...I've been wanting to somehow recreate our wedding Thank You's of last year (which, I must confess, doubled as Christmas cards since I didn't send those at all!) by sending out something with pictures of our new family (yay, husband and dogs!)...and this would be such a simple, unique, and personal project that I think I could actually get done BEFORE the holidays hit!
This blog thing is starting to catch on for me, too, as a fun and somewhat interactive way of keeping up with friends (some are more interactive than others!)...I love sharing pictures with my friends across state lines, and posting them online is a fun way to share what's going on in our lives with each other. What fun ideas, guys - keep 'em coming!
Oh yeah...

:) I want those peel-n-sticks!
I've had some people asking how I know all the fun ladies who are a part of my blog party so here goes:
Jessie F.(in the wedding dress on the front post)--Jessie and I marched drum corps together when we were 21and had the time of our lives. We won a world championship together and since have shared in one another's weddings, the birth of my Lily and I'm sure many more fun things to come.
Amber S. (with Jessie/wearing green on the front post) --Amber is Jessie's sister who came on tour with us for two weeks...she's loads of fun and has two ADORABLE little ones!
Laura K. (in the white sweater)--Laura and I were made in the same batch of babies in heaven. Seriously, we are so alike it is crazy sometimes. We met 5 years ago when we both started working at Bellarmine University together (2 days apart) and we too have shared our weddings and many other memories together.
Mandy B.(in the black sweater)--Mandy and I met through Laura K. she's a ton of fun and has a beautiful little girl! Mandy is always good for a laugh and a girls lunch.
Jenny K. (in the brown shirt)--Another friend through Laura K. who is planning her wedding for October of next year. (YAY!). Jenny, Mandy, Laura and I did girls lunches together when I was living in Louisville.
Mary Beth B. --ANOTHER friend through Laura K. Mary Beth is a true sweetheart and PHENOMENAL artist! She'll be right at home with Cheryl on this board.
Marie T--I'm sure that Marie and I have met a time or two via...who else...Laura! Laura heard about our party and got Marie and Mary Beth on board to hang with us this week!
Welcome to all you fun ladies...don't be afraid to join in on the fun!

Welcome to all of Heather's (and Laura's) friends. Hi Heather and Laura...I miss you both :)
I think the post card idea is really cool. When Claudia moved to Texas I got one of her postcards and have been wondering every since how she did it!
I also love the label idea. I am HORRIBLE with birthday cards so this may help me get it right...finally :)
Have a great day everyone!
Don't forget out our Helping Hands Family!
HELP OUR FAMILY FROM PA HAVE AN AMAZING CHRISTMAS!!!
What can you do? We still need toys(see the post on the Helping Hands page for items needed), cloths, money, gift cards (Walmart is your best bet), or whatever else you want to donate to this deserving family.
Checks can be made out to Tera Johnson. Everything can be mailed to Tera Johnson, 2590 North Moreland, E22, Shaker Heights, OH 44120. Questions, email me: tmichalski05@jcu.edu
*Do you grab a cup of coffee or a donut every morning on your way to work? If so, think about giving that up every day this week and putting that money towards helping our family!
*Going out for drinks with your friends this coming weekend? Grab a bottle or two or wine or some beer and have them over to your house. The money saved (which will be a lot) can go towards our family!
*DYING for that new pair or shoes? Put it on your Christmas list and ask Santa. Use the money you were going to buy the shoes with to give to our family!
*Ask your friends, family, neighbors and strangers (hey, tis the season) if they can donate even just $1. If 10 people get $10 that is $100 for our family. Every little bit helps!
Welcome new HLAers!
My entire family is obsessed with picture cards. It never fails that I get at least one every holiday and for Christmas, I never have enough fridge space. Mark & I are looking forward to having a little one to send out some pictures of our own!
Wow! A lot going on this morning. I'm late! I'm late!
Welcome new readers! I hope you will become regulars after this week! Claudia has great ideas!
LOVE both ideas this morning- especially the labels. Be prepared and it will happen. I am not the greatest at sending my friends mail but have gotten a bit better since joining this blog. :) Always great ideas and that extra needed push. And, who doesn't love getting mail. I have received more compliments this past year on items that have been mailed to friends. Thanks to Highlowaha.
I do keep in touch with some friends via email but most of the time it's the emails where you fill out the surveys about yourself which are fun but not personal.
I have something to add to my Planner Pad. Organize labels! 2009 is going to be fun!
And just a note on the picture cards for the holidays. I love the ones that include the WHOLE family as I love seeing my friends and not just their kids.
OK - the postcards are a fabulous idea. over the years my Holiday mauiling list has only gotten bigger, and I feel really bad when I cut people off of it.
Now the labels - GENIUS!! I am a notoriously BAD card-sender, letter-writer. This would probably help me loads.
Thanks for inviting me...I am excited to be part of the group and get everyone's creative ideas. It will make me a much better friend/family member.
P.S. Jessie - the postcards to grandparents from places I traveled was toally my idea that you stole. ;)
Amber... I ascribe to the belief that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Jessie using your postcard idea is a sure sign you are creative and that you will be right at home here at highlowaha.
Heather, thanks for the overview of how you know everyone. It helps put it all into context. Can we call them the "Snow Flakes" for the week? Heather and the Snow Flakes. I crack myself up!
Hello People. I am apologizing on behalf of my better half for the "Super Bowl" update being late. Our computer at home needs a swift kick in the processor. Any who, strublesuds.com has the winner posted. Thanks to everyone.
Hi all, and thanks for the warm welcome. Jenny K. here, although in another year it will be a W! Woo Hoo!
I love the picture postcard idea, although I don't know that I'd need a hundred of them... I don't know that many people, and know myself well enough to know that I'd never write that much. I'm way too lazy!
Hey everyone!
Heather, thanks for the sweet plug! I love reading the ideas and the comments. Blogs are a good way to stay connected.
I've recently been introduced to Skype, which is a free download. You can video conference with another Skype member, anywhere in the world, for free! I've tried it with the kids in my preschool class, since we have twin girls who moved to Brazil this year, and it was so much fun. We also did a "virtual" baby shower using Skype, and that was fun, too!
Of course, I love getting anything in the mail (I still have letters from Laura, Jenny and Mandy from 4th grade...somewhere...), but for people who like to talk on the phone, Skype rocks!
Looking forward to more awesome ideas!
XO, mary beth
Jenny K.
Would you use a 100 over a year? Or maybe even two years...You might fall in love with them and send MORE mail more often even if your contact list doesn't increase.
Cheryl... point well taken. I ordered 1000 postcards and have made it my life ambition to slowly chip away at the stack. True I use them occasionally to do a large mailing (birth announcement), but more times than not I mail them 2 or 3 at a time. If I snap a cute picture of the boys, I send one to each aunt and the grandparents.
Also, I just had this thought...
What about REVERSE gifting them?!?!?! Here's the idea. Send 12 of them to a friend - stamped and addressed to you. Attach a note, asking her to send you one a month so you can stay in touch.
Anyone who knows me is laughing right now, as I will stop at nothing to get mail in my mail box!!!!
The postcards are a fabulous idea! I am the most unorganized person that ever existed, so I can't see myself being able to pull off the whole mailing label idea... simply because it would be unlikely I'd be able to keep track of the labels that long. But the postcards, especially in lieu of Christmas cards, I could definitely do. Way to inspire communication - great theme for the week, and great ideas to go with it. The week is starting off well!
Uhh... my bad. Apparently I was supposed to log in or something and because I failed, the computer recognized me as "gokus." In any event, "gokus" is in fact Marie T. Just thought I'd clear that up.
Ok... I figured it out. Sorry to have wasted all this commenting space on such nonsense. Anyway, the comments posted to "gokus" are more accurately attributed to me. :)
Welcome to all of Heather's friends!
I LOVE the post card idea for several reasons:
1. I collect post cards
2. I love pictures
3. I love sending (and receiving) mail!
Also, I really like the labels idea ... it's kind of like an interactive "to do" list ... where you can literally see the items coming off of your list! All while making people smile :)
