Whack on the Side of the Head Wednesday

So here I am... 5:15 a.m. sitting in Starbucks with a Cinnamon Dolce in one hand and my Whack Pack in the other.  It's Wednesday, the one day of the week my brain (and hopefully yours) is sure to get a a vigorous workout.

Challenge locked firmly into place.  ...Now now for Von Oech's whack.

Give Yourself A Whack on the Side of the Head.  The more often you do something in the same way, the more difficult it is to think about doing it in any other way.  Break our of this "prison of familiarity" by disrupting your habitual thought patterns.  Write a love poem in the middle of the night.  Eat ice cream for breakfast.  Wear red sox.  Visit a junk yard.  Work the weekend.  Take the slow way home. Sleep on the other side of the bed.  Such jolts to your routines will lead to new ideas.  How can you whack your thinking?

"Prison of familiarity."  "Disrupt your habitual thought patterns.."  "Think about doing it another way?"  Hmmm.... I always make my daily post in the morning.  Hmmm... not today.  Today we're going to do it another way.  Today, we'll meet tonight.  Check back sometime after 6:30 p.m..  We have a dilemma to solve and I'll need your help.  Rest up, write a poem, eat ice cream for lunch.  Do something to whack your thinking and show up this evening ready to be creative.

Signing off until later today...

AAAHHH...I don't know if I can handle the suspense.
You are whacking my routine right now and it isn't a comfortable feeling. (I guess that is a sure sign that my routine needed whacking).

P.S. Two weeks from today we'll be hitting the road.

By the time I read the original post I had already changed my routine and didnt know it.

I will be married (19 yrs on 6/24). Since getting married I have not slept past 8am. My husband and son are away for the next few days and I actually just crawled out of bed and its 9:45 am. So I fulfilled my change of routing.

Now back to being the creature of habit that I am!!!!

Now Claudia, today my "random act of kindness" will unfold. I wanted to give it to someone who is somehow a link to highlowaha, truly deserving of an act of kindness, someone that is always sooo kind, and someone that would NEVER expect one from me in a million years.... Can you guess who it is???

CLAUDIA!!!!!!!! My desk is cleared off. Now what am I going to do all day at work? Change is good (I guess) but it isn't always easy.

Heather, have you had your garage sale yet? How did it go? Or, how has your planning?

Maureen, are you going to keep us in suspense all day? Who is it? What are you sending them?

Claudia's mom

Cheryl and Cassie, I wanted to wait until today because that is when it is to take place.......

Cassie.... living in NY may have given it away but I decided to send her something I knew she would love, a bouquet of summer flowers. I have always know her mom to love flowers, and working in a florist also gave it away.

Anyway, I could have driven over there because I only live 15 minutes away but I thought the whole delivery thing was precious.. She is really the "beginning" of highlowaha if you listen to Claudia she refers to her mom alot!

Claudia should give you 10 points for guessing (ha ha)!!!

aww. That's sweet!

Well, I think this is fun. I am already somewhat into my routine for the day, but I am going to do as many things as I can differently today! We will see what unfolds...

I am also sending out a random acts of kindness package later today...it'll be there in the next few days!

Maureen and Cassie. First, Maureen. THANK YOU! That is SO absolutely thoughtful of you. It literally brings a tear to my eye, because you are so right. My mom is at the core of highlowaha. She is responsible for any creativity I have. Your gesture is so absolutely meaningful to me. Thank you is an understatement.

As an aside... all the Random Act of Kindness books at Starbucks eventually got taken and today I left another. Maybe people will start to get the hang of it.

Cassie... I am IMPRESSED! One might think you were in Maureen's head. Not quite sure how you guessed, other than I know you to be extremely intuitive. Yet, another example.

Maureen,
Awesome, what a great way to honor Claudia and her mom.

Cheryl,
No garage sale yet, quite frankly I'm thinking there might not be one as I am short, short, short on time.
But then, I've been known to pull things off in 12 minutes or less so...I'll keep you posted.

Maureen and Tera--way to go on the random acts you have both inspired me...I need to find something as equally nice to do in my own world.

Peggy--I have GOT to order some cards from you. I'm not sure what yet but I'll keep you posted. Your blog of cards is UNBELIEVABLE!

To everyone: What have you done to shake up your routine today?

--Me? Things are pretty shook up without any assistance on my part. I have little work left on my plate (just getting my computer in order before I leave and cleaning out my office). Then I went to a farewell lunch with some colleagues to a place I've never been (it was delicious by the way). Now I think I'm going to clean out some files in my desk.

Claudia-
Today I had lunch with my friend Leah. It was a lunch initiated from the Let's Do Lunch post and the person I know.

Leah works for another division in my company and it was a very nice lunch.

Heather- your next!

My day has been pretty routine but we did try a new restaurant for lunch and we stayed longer. Does that count? The routine for tonight was supposed to be boys with their dad but an email has initiated a trade but that's not really out of routine.

My day has been anything but routine today!

I had an 8AM staff meeting...usually at 10 on Monday's...so getting up early was not fun! Then I had a late lunch...1:30...and with my mom! She came over to my apartment to look at wedding veil (yes, I'm 3 weeks away and still no veil). And I'm still at work...which is WAY longer than a typical day!

We'll see what the rest of the day has in store for me...

Claudia, you are very welcome. I am happy to get the chance to prove that what goes around comes around. Hey there's one for your tins. Anyway your mom has always been sweet and she is very creative.

For the rest of you at highlowaha, Claudia has always been the girl to make everyone feel like "they counted". I hope you all have as many years enjoying her creative energy like I have for 30 years.

God I feel so OLD!

Lori you dont know me but Claudia does and I always put myself down because I didnt go to college... I got married and I have to tell you it is the greatest accomplishment (along with my 3 kids). I am very proud to be one of the few that made it this far...

Welcome to the club of "making it work"!!! I hope you enjoy your anniversary. Congrats!!:)

Tera, get a veil! Maybe Claudia should have made it a demand for extra points.

Get off the computer and get a veil so mom doesn't look older from the stress you are gonna cause her!!!!

Tera...I have a beautiful veil (and blusher) you are welcome to if you are trying to save the money.
Let me know and I'll ship them to you.

Maureen - I'm working on it...I swear. I'm probably the most laid back bride in the world. I'm taking the attitude of if it doesn't get done, it doesn't get done. I've got a dress and Treye's got a tux. I figure that as long as we say "I do" and we eat, drink and dance with our friends and family, everything is going to be perfect!

H - I'm looking for an elbow length veil that has satin trim around the edge. My friend Noel is bring me her sister in laws tomorrow. If that doesn't work then I found one online. I'm just not willing to pay $150+ for one at a bridal store. I'm never going to wear it again.

All - any thoughts on how to make use of your wedding dress after the day? My photographer is doing something called "trash the dress" where brides can go to crazy places and get pics taken. I'm thinking about doing the zoo since Treye and I love zoo's! That's TBA...but in the meantime, I'd like to hear all of your thoughts!

And where is today's post...it's driving me nuts!

Dr. Beeny,
I've changed my daily routine by reading HLA at home instead of at work. Funny how I got home and your entry still wasn't posted.

Also, I want to add a phrase for the Altoids boxes since I didn't get to read yesterday's post until a few minutes ago: Carpe Diem

Tera, my daughter had a gorgeous crown with a finger length veil for her communion. She fell in love with it and it was actually a bridal veil. It is trimmed with satin piping all around. That is what she loved about it. If you want a crown (crystals and pearls) I can take a pict and send it to Claudia to post. As I said it was intended for a bride.

As for not being a wreck.... I went to the mall the day of my wedding (I got married at 4PM). My friend Janine (yes Claudia RESTAINO) was in awe of my not being nervous. Enjoy it because it goes by so fast.

Tera ~ I had my mom use my wedding gown to make a mini-version and my daughter wore it as her Christening gown. Now, she has a special Christening gown, I still have my dress (sorta), and yet I don't have the huge thing hanging in a closet!!!!
(((Way more than you want to know...but this worked out perfect as the gown my son had worn belonged to my husband. So, now he has the gown to do with what he wants. And, my daughter has a special one from her mom to do with what she wants hand crafted by her grandmother.)))
