Today's idea came to me with a little help from my friends. And, it's a good thing because last night was a late night. A group of friends came over for dinner last night for a somewhat last minute barbecue.
When the burgers were done and everything was ready to go, I pulled out our Standard Oval Sandwich Baskets. Not a time goes by, when we use those baskets, that we do not get some kind of comment about how cool they are or their usefulness. So, today's entry will be short, simple, and practical.
We bought these black baskets from Sam's Club three or four years ago. My job, at the time, was such that I hosted a lot of students and staff at my house and we were always in search of convenient ways to serve informal food (hamburgers, barbecue, chicken sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, etc...). We wanted minimal waste and minimal clean up.
The sandwich baskets were the perfect solution. All we do is place a tin foil or wax paper liner in the base of the basket and place the food right on top. Just like something you'd see in an old-time diner. When everyone is finished... we simply throw the liners into the garbage, rinse out the baskets, and call it a day.
How much? A box of twenty-four Oval Sandwich Baskets from Sam's is about $15.00 (can't remember exact amount years later) and a box of 500 liners (that's a lot of people, unless you own a restaurant) is approximately $8.00. Four years later... the baskets are holding up great and we're still on the original box of liners.
With summer comes the onslaught of graduation parties (Maureen); cookouts, birthday parties (Andrea), pool parties, and other social gatherings. Consider getting a set of baskets for yourself. You won't regret it!
Announcements:
- Calling all traders! I'm serious about trading up until I can get Cheryl a plane ticket to escort me to whatever city becomes our winning destination. But, it won't work without people offering up some trades. Keep the dream alive by sharing our goal with as many people as you know. All they... or YOU have to do is post whatever it is they are willing to trade for my fabulous Fish on a Stick. Want to know more about this adventure? Read yesterday's post (Now Boarding: Bigger or Better).
- Taste of USA is underway. Today is South Dakota. Tomorrow... Minnesota. Want your vote to count, but don't know what I'm talking about? Click on the icon at the top right hands side of my page.
- Free For All Friday (FFAF) topic: After a number of requests and a handful of phone calls with friends in despair, this week's FFAF has been set. It is... Staying Sane When School is Out. What strategies or suggestions do all of you have for how moms can stay sane (and occupy the time of their children) now that school is out for the summer. They can be suggestions of things to do with your kids or tips for how moms stay rejuvenated. Remember, don't post our ideas on the subject until Friday. Mill it over for the next couple of days.

Claudia, Michael graduated on Sunday and his party is this Saturday. I have 50+ people coming. I usually have something just like the baskets you use. I have too many people to worry if they throw out the basket or not. Some people are in another world. Anyway I was thinking of something to trade up but was wondering if a case of wine would be appropriate. Richie's wife works for a wine distributer. I can get excellent wine and send it to you. How would I do this and do you need a picture of the case etc.....
Let me know I can get any kind (merlot, zinfandel, white, rose etc)
Lord knows I don't drink wine..... I might as well use the chance to get it when I can!
WOW, Maureen! That's a great trade up! That totally beats what I was going to offer! Thanks!!! What do you think Claudia...has anyone offered something better?
Come on Hawaii!!! :)
I saw those baskets this past weekend and they are AWESOME! I am definetly purchasing them for around the pool!
Maureen... thanks for offering the wine as a "trade-up" for the Fish on a Stick."
Not only is it the best offer to date, it is the only offer to date. The idea is to solicit a number of trade items and then to make a choice between the items offered.
Now we just need a few more items posted, so I can evaluate the odds. Cheryl... post your offer, even if you think it pales in comparison.
Maureen, I will think through the logistics of getting the wine where it needs to go. It is definitely doable. THANKS for breaking the seal and throwing down the first offer of the game!
Ok its official I will have a full case of Sauvignon Blanc (considered a great summer wine) it will be at my door tomorrow night. What is next?
I have to get more New Yorkers to post. Between my family and friends I know of at least 7 more people.
It wont be as much fun for Claudia to visit NY after all she lived here for 18 yrs.
Cheryl looks like she really wants to go to Hawaii.....
You better do some BIG trading up:)
Maureen,
Send the wine to our house and I will make sure it gets distributed properly!
2707 Canterbury St.
I have some scrapbooking books and misc crafting items I was going to put together as an offer but the wine is a better trade don't you think? I do.
Just for the record... Hawaii would fabulous! Sandy beaches, fruity drinks, Hawaiian hunks but I will be happy to get to go ANYWHERE!!!! :)
Chicago was looking pretty good after I checked out all those pizza's online that Cristine directed us to at www.tasteofchicago.com!! I love good pizza!
Maureen! Great! What a great trade. I think a case of summer wine will get us well on our way to a plane ticket!
Here's the plan. I will send your "Fish on a Stick," but you hold onto your case of wine until we know who you are trading with. Tomorrow I will officially announce the new item up for trade (a case of wine) and we will see what offers come rolling in. Once we determine who is willing to trade and for what, then we will tell you the address where the wine should be sent.
Let me know if you have questions. I love it. One day in and we already have some takers.
This is Julie again ...
Thanks for the props on the Friendship Journal I gave Tera ... I had such a fabulous time starting it and can't wait to see what it will evolve into! Please feel free to pass on any creative ideas you have to me (jschnepp@daemen.edu).
Still watching my mail every day for Flat Stanley ... he has yet to arrive in Buffalo. Any ideas on his where-abouts? Did he get stuck at the border?
And the burgers were great, too :) Thanks for hosting with such short notice. Our turn is next!
