It's what I love about this experience... I never quite know where my blog is going to go in a given week. I simply trust that the premise of my blog is true... creativity is everywhere and, therefore, ideas will present themselves in an on-going way.
So, here's insight into how my mind works (which for you, Anon, I know is quite a mystery).
My sister, Ann, and my niece came to visit this weekend. Ann loves - and I do mean LOVES accessories. She has a belt collection only to be surpassed by her shoe collection which still is only to be surpassed by her jewelry collection. To put this in some kind of context - she admits to having over 100 pairs of shoes (which could likely mean it is more like 120 or so - with a minor in cowboy boots).
I fully intended to interview my sister for some creative tidbit I could feature for this morning's blog entry. Then, on Saturday morning I got my haircut by Erika my hairdresser (who I love and highly recommend for anyone unfortunate enough to have straight fine hair like mine). She immediately asked about my Easter and then launched into a great story about Easter with her family (underscoring everything I believe about the importance of family rituals and traditions). Albeit after Easter, I immediately thought her story should be shared with our readers.
So here I am. Ann and her Accessories... Erika and her Easter story... you see where this is going, right?.... A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. There are six vowels and I blog six out of seven days a week. A perfect match!!!!! So there will be a theme this week... Vowels. Each day I will feature a creative idea based on a vowel.
Now, here's the problem and hopefully, where you all can come in. I don't have six ideas - one for each vowel. I only have the first two covered - A for Ann and E for Erika. So, I am counting on my trusty and creative readers to provide me with simple words -prompts - for each of the other letters. This can be a ton of fun. You provide me with any random word beginning with either I, O, U, or Y and I will use it to prompt the creative ideas for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We're such a participatory group it's likely I'll get more than one suggestion per letter. If so, I will either combine words or select one that strikes my fancy.
Now for Aunt Ann's Accessories... The picture above is Ann modeling her new purchases - three belts, one pair of boots, and one pair of western mules. Mind you, Ann, Allegra (my niece), and Errol live in a New York apartment. So where she stores all her accessories is a mystery. Take note, Tera as there might be an idea or two in here for you. Ann, the city girl, swears she was born in the wrong region because of her love for western attire. She has a collection of over 20 pairs of cowboy boots (all different colors) and just this weekend replaced her prized purple boots with a new pair (see her left foot). When asked where she kept all of her boots (never mind shoes), she shared an idea I thought worth passing along.
Her boots live in her bedroom, high on a hand built shelf that runs along the top of the wall. She describes each pair of boots as being colorful and unique in their own way, so the idea of using them as a creative room decoration seemed not only plausible but somewhat ingenious. Somewhere along the line she also acquired a framed picture of a girl wearing a tattered pair of western boots and that too sits along the shelf - in a way pulling the whole idea together. The lesson here is that some of what we have tucked or packed away, when displayed, can actually serve to be an aesthetically pleasing decoration. By being a little less utilitarian and a little more creative, Ann has effectively - personalized her living space and freed up storage space for something else.
Ann's approach to storing her boots got me thinking.... I was at one of our readers houses a couple of weeks ago and she collects plates from all the places she and her family have traveled. They hang on a wall in her kitchen, adding a lot of great color and serving as a great conversation piece. I don't have anything cool like that... gel pens, ribbon, wrapping paper, over-sized items of all sorts (for another day's blog). About the only thing I could think of are my scarves and neckerchiefs. I worked at Talbots for a number of years and acquired a collection of scarves that rivals Ann's shoe collection. The colors and textures lend themselves perfectly to being displayed. But where and how? That is the question.
Signing off until tomorrow when maybe I will have found an enterprising solution to my envious and endless collection of elegant scarves...

Thanks for breaking the seal and being the first to offer up some suggestions. You're an overachiever, so I shouldn't be surprised that you listed multiple suggestions for all four letters.
What if you strung a wire in your closet or somewhere and then clip the scarves to it for display. I have seen this done with old vintage knapkins or linens. It looks really cute when done right.
Highlowaha, I don't have any thoughts on your blogs for the rest of the week, but I had to tell you that I felt your presence all weekend! Saturday was the Women in Leadership Conference - a brainchild of yours at BU that will continue your legacy to empower young female leaders. Later that evening, I went shopping at the Summit with my mom. When we went in talbots, the woman who helped us reminded me SOOOO much of you, right down to the haircut and scarf around her neck! Loved it!
Oh bother! I had my comment all typed out and lost it. I love the boot deco-idea. I saw a decorating idea in Pottery Barn along the same line where the dining room was decorated with cookbooks aligned on shelves.

Can't wait to see what the rest of the week has in store.
I am the Jenna from Bucknell! And my mentor is the woman you eat cupcakes with - I keep her identity a secret because as we know, she likes to sometimes stay anonymous. :-)
Melanie... thanks for the kind words about WIL. Needless to say, your leadership on the project so early on in the program's existence is one of the reasons it is still around. Congratulations on successfully completing the fourth annual.
Jenna... wow!!! I LOVE that you are reading my blog. Anyone with you-know-who as a mentor is not only a welcome addition to my blog, but is bound to be a creative contributor. You have, after all, learned from the BEST!!!
I would love to see your scarves someday...how have we been friends for four years and yet all I've ever seen of them are when they are around your neck?
Perhaps you could hang a piece of trellis and weave the scarves into a tapestry of sorts?
As far as ideas for the rest of the week here goes:
I: I (Claudia) offer Imaginative Ideas for documenting Important Information
O: Observing Others creativity in action
U: Useful tips for...
Y: You(blog readers) provide summer Yard care tips
Okay clearly I don't have my creativity cap on today...maybe because I haven't talked to you in so long.
Now that you are better you definitely need to give me a ring...I MISS YOU!
Cristine,
I just happened to notice a link to an ad on the main page for 58 cent party favors...they had great personalized shot glasses for very reasonable costs...perhaps you should consider using those.

Highlowaha:
You post caught my attention today, because you mention how you will be themeing each day of the week with a vowel sound. I immediately was drawn to the letter I.
I have recently been reading the book "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. It is currently one of Oprah's books club choices and the folow up to his initial book "The Power of Now."
Blog readers I encourage and emplore you to check this book out. I just started it last night and it has really opened my eyes in so many ways in regards to personal development.
One of the primary focuses that Tolle emphasises is the awakening of our conciousness and awareness to the world around us. This is often difficult if not impossible due to the fact that from day one we are born with the focus on "I, me, mine, and ownership". This is socialized within all aspects of our lives as develop. The book discusses letting go of this focus and truely discovering what matters.
Check it out...my explanation does not do the book justice at all.
I feel it is implied that Anon places no value on underscored traditions. This is certainly not the case....but I hope by becoming the bad guy, some of you (especially highlowaha) were able to reflect on my original post and consider another point of view. You are willing to do so when you draw from a deck of cards, so certainly a suggestion from a reader might allow one to also re-evaluate from a new lens. That purpose is certainly why I am a reader.
Your scarves collection…In a fun and casual room they could become a valance, each tied to a curtain rod, boasting their colors and hanging at various lengths. (Is there enough to flush out an entire curtain rod?) Or perhaps you could fold them and stack them in a tall clear square vase, each only peeking a bit of their color and personality, but creating something fun and fresh. (This could cause frustration if you wish to wear the one layered at the bottom.) Retired scarves could become throw pillows.

I collect cookie cutters the way you guys collect boots and scarves. They currently take one full cabinet in our kitchen. I like to keep them all together and I hate to root through them to find the one I need. I current store them in bins in the cabinet but it’s not so great. Any ideas on ways to store them? Oh! I also don’t want to dust them so out in the open is no good for me.
Cassie- for the cookie cutters, I have no idea how to create this but it might work to have somewhat of a peg board, and then stick long round posts in it close together. (the peg board would sit flat on the shelf) Then you could stack the cookie cutters on the posts (so there would be maybe 10 on a post, depending on how tall your cabinets are). I don't know how practical this would be, it would be annoying if you wanted something on the bottom. But then at least you could see them all at once. I wish I could draw it out b/c it's hard to explain what I'm thinking! Just a suggestion.
For the scarf idea, maybe it would be cute to take down the door to your closet and hang a curtain rod, then tie (gently) your scarves to it to create a sort of curtain? I don't know if it would ruin the scarves or not. Plus it might be hard to get in and out of your closet so... hum.. maybe that's not a great idea :)Good luck coming up with something!
Cassie, The first thing that came to mind was the notion of somehow using a dowel (either horizontal or vertical). Naturally it would be more fun if the dowel was painted some fun color(s). You would slide the cookie cutters onto the dowel, allowing you to see everything you had all at once.
When you want to use one, you undo one end of the dowel and remove cookie cutters until you reach the one you want. I'm thinking you can rinse them off as you use them, so I'm not thinking that their being out in the open would be terrible.
Just a thought.
Also, you might remember how my ribbon was displayed in Louisville... above my desk in gutters. I placed the spools of ribbon in the gutters and then let the ends hang over the edge. When I wanted to use it, I just pulled the end of the ribbon. Maybe a gutter could be your solution. Affix it to a wall somewhere (kitchen, garage) and then place the cookie cutters in the gutter.
Ok. that's all I got on cookie cutters. I'm out.
