It's Here! Olympic Opening XXIX

E X T R A!  E X T R A!
According to my sister in-law, and our friend, Cassie - there was a siting of RAY at the Lifetime Fitness Center, in Grapevine, Texas this morning.  Therefore... it is conceivable we will have a new reader or two visiting us today.  Welcome Lifetime Fitness members!  Kudos to you for making it to the gym each morning.  Now here's a dose of health and wellness for your soul.
**************

A small tidbit about me... I love pomp and circumstance.  On election night, I'm glued to CNN.  I want to know about election results of every district in every state.  I have to know about every hanging or pregnant chad, and what each of the candidates is doing.  I don't want to miss a thing.  Inauguration day, same thing - though sometimes begrudgingly depending upon who we are swearing into office.

Then, you can imagine how I jolted out of bed this morning with excitement in my stomach.  Tonight is the beginning of the Olympics.  I have been preparing for today for a long time - thinking through how all my various ideas can be pieced together for a memorable couple of weeks.  Gathering tonight for the Opening Olympic Ceremonies is one of the things I have planned.  I hope you won't miss it.

Whether it be family, friends, or neighbors... grab a group of people, order your Chinese food (and cookies) and join us for...

Virtual Dinner Party

DON'T MISS IT!

Nothing is too much effort for this group of readers who continue giving so much.  So when thinking about what would really make this Olympic experience special, I thought... "How about our very own highlowaha Olympic correspondent...embedded right there in Beijing, China?"  So that's what I did.  I arranged for our very own highlowaha correspondent to report from China on her Olympic experience.

O.K., so the plan didn't exactly go down like that, but I think you'll find the true story even more inspiring.  It is a GREAT example of how when you are living your Personal Legend... "all the universe will conspire in helping you to achieve it."  Such has been the case with my plans for "doing the Olympics" - highlowaha style.

Quick Background... One day, as does occasionally happen, I found myself wondering if my time spent on highlowaha mattered.  You know... kind of a "what-is-the-purpose-of-life-moment" or a "if-a- tree-falls-in-a-forest-and-nobody-was-around-to-hear-it, did-it-make-a-sound-moment."  That VERY SAME DAY, I received an email from a friend I haven't heard from in years.  Her name is Alden.  The first line of her email was, "Oh man - am I enjoying your blog."  The email went on to tell what she was doing and then asked a small favor.  She was looking for creative ideas to commemorate her upcoming trip to... are you ready?...........  CHINA!!!

Let me repeat that.  I am sitting in my quiet home dreaming up ideas about how to bring the Olympics to my highlowaha readers and Alden emails me, OUT OF THE BLUE, asking for ideas about commemorating her trip to CHINA.  Yes...  all the universe will conspire when you are living your personal legend.  I immediately hit "reply" and said, "Alden call me.  We need to talk ASAP."  That was the beginning of a series of phone calls trying to coordinate some kind of partnership between highlowaha and Alden's trip to China.

The other serendipitous part of this is that Alden is an artist and today is Freebie Friday.  What a perfect way to introduce you to our very own Beijing Olympic correspondent AND celebrate Freebie Friday, all at the same time.  My normal caveat...  I will not do Alden justice.  She is an amazing woman with a contagious spirit.  A truly contagious and radiant spirit.

Alden and I met while I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia.  I was advising a talented group of student leaders and Alden happened to have been one of them.  My favorite memory of Alden was her calling me to arrange at meeting (at Starbucks).  Her request was a little unconventional, because at the time Alden served as a general member of this leadership team and most of my time was spent advising the executive members.  Therein lies the beauty of Alden.  Unlike so many students who take on too much but do to little, Alden was brimming with ideas about how the leadership group could be improved.  And, she personally wanted to help make it happen.  Needless to say, Alden was snatched up quickly and invited to serve on the executive board for the next year.  That, I might add, was the year the organization won "Student Organization of the Year."  Coincidence?  No such thing.

Now Alden lives and works in San Francisco.  She works for a company called Lucas Arts and specifically helps with the company's Gaming Division (which, I think, is to say she helps techies create new and exciting computer games).  That is by day.  By night, Alden is a singer.  She has an incredible voice and - I think - even tried out for American Idol one year.  She's been on tour around the country and has some upcoming shows in San Francisco and her home state of North Carolina.  Hear Alden's music by visiting her web site at http://www.aldenlive.com

Alden the friend.  Alden the professional.  Alden the artist.  Now... Alden the tourist of China and Olympic spectator.  Why this Olympics?  Why all the way to China?  Among the many other things that make Alden eclectic and interesting, is the fact that Alden minored in Chinese in college.  While most students were coasting by with Spanish 101 or French for the really diligent, Alden elected to MINOR in Chinese (not just take the requisite two classes).  Her adventurous spirit mandated a semester abroad, in China, during her junior year.  Going back for the Olympics is a coming home of sorts.  Only this time Alden won't have the burden of classes six days a week.  This time, she and her best childhood friend (who, by the way, just took the Bar Exam), will visit the country not saddled with academic responsibilities.
Amy and Alden - Our Olympic Correspondents

That leaves Alden PLENTY-O-TIME to share her experience with us.  Here's how it will work.  I will receive an email from Alden each day, informing me that her a entry has been posted on her blog.  I will include her blog address each day and notify you (via the comments) when the blog has been updated.  I am not 100% certain, but I think we can look for her blogs to be formatted as her highs, lows, and ahas for each day they are gone.  Love it.  Be sure to check in on her site.  Maybe, just maybe, we'll have some Alden and Amy trivia contests.

What else?  Oooh.  Today's prize.  Yes, in spite of the fact that Alden is in the process of wrapping things up at work and packing for a 12-day trip to China, she has agreed to mail me a CD to be given away to one of our very own lucky readers.  To be the lucky recipient, all you have to do is answer this question correctly...

In addition to her Chinese classes, her Business in China class, and her Chinese Cinema class, what athletic class did Alden take while doing her semester abroad?  First person to get this right wins the CD.  I might add... there is a HILARIOUS story to be told about her experience in this class.  Hopefully once the guess is made, Alden will share the story with us.

NOT signing off until tomorrow.  I will meet you back here tonight for the Opening Ceremonies of the XXIX Olympiad.  Remember, important announcement at 9:00 and prizes to be given away.

See you tonight...

Patchwork

The World's Longest Pair of Jeans

I feel like today is the start of something big (long and big). It's all part of a master plan... my master plan to engage, challenge, and recognize this growing and committed group of readers. Hopefully you'll agree that the real genius... and fun... of today's creative idea is only just beginning. The real beauty of it will come as the days and months pass. I can say, "genius," without worrying that you'll think I'm boasting, because today's idea is actually a dual brainstorm between me and... Ms. Kolkmeier... Katie, that is.

But first...

HIGHLOWAHA's
NEXT BIG EVENT
*Announcement will be posted at 9:00 CST*

*****************************************************************

Let me warn you... equipment is necessary for this past time. To participate you'll need one old, ready-to-be-retired pair of jeans, BUT... that still fit! Don't have a pair of jeans? You'll want to pick up a pair. No need for an expensive pair of designer jeans. A simple pair of Levi's, Gap, or even Walmart jeans will work. Why? With a little time, a lot of fun, and some effort on your part... the jeans will be covered in... PATCHES.

Was it spotting the World's Longest Pair of jeans in Lucky Jeans that prompted the idea? Or , was it unexpectedly passing by the Girl Scout store and going inside to admire the wall of patches? Hard to know. But, the eureka moment looked something like that old commercial for Reeses Cups - peanut butter bumps into chocolate and the PERFECT treat is born.

Instead... jeans meet patches and the perfect idea is born. Highlowaha readers (men and women alike) will have chances to earn patches for all kinds of fun highlowaha shenanigans. Display your earned patches on your specially chosen jeans and then wear the jeans at Taste of USA: Philadelphia and other fun events sure to be forthcoming. If girl scouts, boy scouts, the military, police officers, and fire fighters - to name a few - can all earn patches in recognition of their accomplishments, then why can't we?

Some important points to get us started...
  • We are troop/squad #218. February 18 (2/18) is the date of the first highlowaha post, so #218 it is. I have an extra set of numbers to the first person who posts a description of his/her newly appointed Patchwork Jeans.
  • Highlowaha readers can recommend activities for which patches can be earned. Simply propose your idea via email (highlowaha@me.mac) or "Comments." We'll formalize and then post to the general readership.
  • In the true spirit of scouting, earning a patch should require sustained effort. So, for instance... you might earn a Reading Raynbow Book Club patch, but only if you participate in at least three of the four books discussed in a year (that's an example. No decision has been made about # of books).
  • Chairs of special projects (Christmas project and Book Club) earn a patch just for chairing. The extra work involved in leading a project justifies the award of the patch. Sue, Maureen, Brian, Julie, and Melanie... your inaugural patches are on their way to you.
  • Much like scouting, "officially" earned highlowaha patches will go on the front of your jeans and other personal favorites (but not highlowaha) sanctioned will go on the back of your jeans. Katie (the bean counter) and I will take responsibility for ordering patches and getting them to you. Patches cost approximately $1.00 each. We are working toward setting up a Pay Pal account, to make transactions easy-peasie.
  • Below is a picture of me wearing my jeans. Notice where the numbers are placed (we would like that to be uniform on each person's jeans). I decided I earned the ice cream patch for eating ice cream every day in the whole month of July and the letter patch came for organizing Peanut and the Shell (really it is so you can get the vision for Patchwork).
Some announcements and then you can dig through your closet for an official pair of "HLA Patchwork" jeans.

Announcements:
  • Don't miss today's posts. Today marks the first post about our HLA Holiday Project. Be sure to click on the icon, which will take you directly to the blog spot. The group has three questions they are posing to we the readers. http://mrhelpinghand.blogspot.com/
  • Project Make Your Mark: I feel some momentum building for this project. Thanks. If you are new to the site and don't know what I am talking about, check Tuesday's post. We are trying to solicit 100 stories of 100 inspiring teachers to surprise 100 unsuspecting teachers from around the country. Helping is easy. Jot your story on paper. Mail it to me (with $5.00) at Claudia Beeny, 4012 Harvestwood Court, Grapevine, Texas, 76051. See Tuesday's (8/5) post for even more detail.
  • Philadelphia here we come. Saturday, September 6, 10:30-4:00. So far we have commitments from Heidi, Tera, and Amy. Whose the next to RSVP, "YES!!!"
  • Did you notice the cool green shirt I was wearing in the picture up top? It goes to the next person who RSVPs, "yes" to meeting us in Philly.
Signing off until tomorrow...

Whack on the Side of the Head Wednesday: How Do You Eat An Elephant?

How do you eat an elephant?  That's what I'm asking right this minute as my mind swirls with all the activity and excitement being generated by our blog.

One bite at a time.  So that's how I'll approach today's blog entry.  One item at a time... knowing that if I keep plugging away, all the important information will get covered.

Announcements at the end.  But first, one short commercial announcement from our sponsor...

Now onto today's whack.  You know what I love about this blog?  There's no resting on your laurels.  No sitting back and eating bon bons.  No break to be taken.  You keep me on my toes.  One hundred ten posts for Virtual Tug of War and 20 for honoring teachers around the country... (using magic markers, to boot)!  You know what it says to me?  It says... "Claudia, get out from behind that MacBook and get to know your audience."

The stakes are high here.  I need 100 stories to go with the 100 packages of markers, so that we may surprise 100 teachers with a dose of inspiration.  Work with von Oech to help me - Claudia - get a clue about how to better reach and mobilize our readers... friends of our readers... friends of friends of our readers.. and so on and so on.  You get the picture.  Clearly I shouldn't have tried taking this on without consulting all of you from the get go.  Lesson learned.

Here's von Oech's whack...

Do the Unexpected:  In 1334, Hochosterwitz Castle was besieged by the Duchess of Tyrol.  As time wore on, the defenders became desperate: their last food was an ox.  The Duchess's situation also was severe: her troops had become unruly, and she had urgent matters elsewhere.  Then, the castle's commander had an idea that must have seemed utter folly to his men.  He had the last ox thrown over the wall in from of the enemy.  The Duchess interpreted this scornful message to mean that the defenders had so much food that they could waste it.  At this, the discouraged Duchess quit her siege.  Because the commander did the opposite of what the Duchess expected, he made her believe that her siege wasn't working.  What surprising tactic can you use to reach your objective?

I've already given it a shot, so now I'll turn the fate of this project over to you for some brainstorming.

Announcements:
  • Julie and Kat:   You'll be happy to know your luggage tags are done and in my hot little hands.  I will be out of town the rest of today, but will be sure to mail them Thursday morning. The rest of you can lament over how you wish you had a set.  It's never too soon to place your holiday orders.

  • Memory Keeper:  Speaking of fun holiday treats... check out Peggy's website.  She recently mailed me THE CUTEST memory keeper.  I already have some ideas about how we, the readers, could use these to embark on a joint project.  Don't feel like waiting for me?  Contact Peggy via her fun website.  http://prdesigns.blogspot.com
  • Christmas Project:  Sue, Maureen, and Brian will soon make their first post about the Highlowaha Holiday Service Project.  Keep your eyes peeled.
  • Reading Raynbow: Check today's comment section to make sure you don't miss out on Round One of Highlowaha's Book Club.

Now I've Done It. Now I've Really Done It...

I've gone and fallen in love with a new idea!  Ugh, and all this on the eve of the Olympics.

That's the thing about a great idea... you can't pretend you didn't think it.  You can't will the idea away, knowing if you just didn't think of it, that life would be so much simpler.  That's not the way it works.  A great idea will gnaw at you... reminders showing up in all the wrong places.  It's as though road signs, dreams, passing conversations, and newspapers conspire to wear you down - until finally a concession is made and implementation of that great idea is underway.  Phew... isn't creativity exhausting?

But first, a reminder...

Teachers.  That's what I can't get off my mind.  Back to school is in full swing.  And yes, while aisle after aisle is filled with new school supplies (trust me, we'll spend a whole day on this topic alone), it is teachers I am most thinking about.  Maybe it's because as grown adults our entire schooling experience can be reduced to a list of  about 8 teachers names.  For me... Mrs. Mueller, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Arcidiacono, Mrs. Pincus, Mrs. Knowles, Ms. Jahoda, Mrs. Mitrou, Mr. Urbatis, and Ms. Boniello.  High school was much more hit or miss in terms of remembering names.

Maybe it's because my dad was a teacher and emblazoned in my memory is that proud feeling I got whenever I heard a student called him Professor Kamhi.  Maybe it's because I have two young boys who haven't even embarked on a single day of their formal schooling yet and I'm wondering... HOPING... that the teachers lucky enough to get to know my boys will realize the incredible amount of lasting impact they can have on a child's life.

Whatever the reason, I am feeling the incredible urge to honor teachers.  I hope you will join me.

I'll try to be clear and I'll try to be fast, because I know all of you are busy.  I want to start a "Make Your Mark" campaign for teachers.  Below is the vision.  Feel free to print off the instructions and pass along to colleagues, friends, neighbors, or even your kids!

MAKE YOUR MARK TEACHER CAMPAIGN
It's as easy as 1, 2, 3
  • Each of us... avid readers, lurkers, occasional visitor, friend of a reader, second cousin of a lurker spend a few minutes and THINK about a teacher who has positively impacted your life.
  • Take 15-20 minutes to WRITE a thoughtful description of how/why the teacher positively impacted you. The more specific the more meaningful.  Be sure to include: (1) the teacher's name; (2) the school at which he/she taught; (3) your first name and age.
  • (If you would be so kind)... MAIL that excerpt to me with $5.00 (to pay for markers, mailing envelope, postage).  My mailing address is Claudia K. Beeny, 4012 Harvestwood Court, Grapevine, Texas, 76051.
  • I, in turn, will attach your story to a package of Crayola markers and then mail it to a random teacher somewhere in the country (you will get to help generate the list of recipients).  If you already have the name of someone you think should receive one of these packages, include it on a separate piece of paper in the envelope you mail.
My goal is to mail 100 inspiring stories with 100 packages of markers to 100 unsuspecting teachers around the country.  Surprise me.  Make me go buy more markers!

Envelopes must be received by Friday, August 22

We can do this.  It's the right thing.  To honor the work of one great teacher, by presenting a piece of his or her legacy in writing, to another teacher is a meaningful way to express our deepest appreciation and admiration for the work they do.

I want to leave you with plenty of time to compose your note, so I'm signing off until tomorrow...

***************************************************************************************
As much as I would love to stop here and begin getting ready for the festivities, there is too much happening and we have WAY too much ground to cover this week.  If you are a newcomer to our site... hang on tight.  We are fun group, busy, and always welcoming.  It won't be long before you want to jump right in and get in on the action.

Announcements at the end...

We're going to be busy for the next few weeks.  Trust me.  I have some fun in store for us, but it means you'll want your mind (and schedule) to be as clear as possible.  With a blink of the eye it will be the end of August and Grandparents Day will be around the corner.  No self respecting member of the highlowaha community can whip out some shoddy, last minute Grandparents Day treat for people as important as these.  So, mark you calendar now.  Sunday, September 7, 2008 is Grandparents Day and today we're going to look ahead at some creative gift ideas.  That will be one more thing you can tick off your list of important things to do.

I like frameworks.  They help reign me in and keep you from wondering what - if any - method there is to my madness.  Today's framework?  Why grandparents, of course.  We will look at creative gift ideas by delving into each of the word's twelve letters.

Get together for a game of golf.
Rally the family to help with a renovation.
Appear on the front door step with an apple pie... and wearing an apron.
No neckties or needlepoint!  Name a star after them.
Digitize their old photos.
Purchase and plant one of their favorite trees.
Ask and audio-archive the answers to 50 questions.
Replace something worn out.
Establish a new family tradition in their honor.
Notify their local paper and place a newsworthy ad.
Take a picture holding a message of thanks.
Subscribe them to a magazine or a fruit of the month delivery.

But why stop there?  We are highlowaha.  Hear us roar.  We could generate ideas using these letters all day long.  Heck... we could turn this into an Olympic sport.  Keep the ideas coming in today's comment section.

But first some announcements;
  • Tonight the Beeny family used our ice cream maker to test Cassie P's winning ice cream recipe (and I might add, the one for which I placed my vote).  Chocolate ice cream, brownie chunks, chocolate chips, and coconut.  It was a huge hit... even with Ricky who requires caramel in any ice cream he eats and who was skeptical of the coconut.
  • As you know the book club (Reading RAYbow) is up and running.  We are reading the book, The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch.  According to Coordinators, Melanie and Julie, the discussion of the first section will occur later this week.  Be on the look out for updates and announcements from Reading Ray himself.
  • Christmas Service Project Coordinators (Sue, Brian, and Maureen) will launch the beginnings of the project this week.  They will want your input, so keep your eyes open for a message from them in the daily posts.
  • Peanuts and Shells.  I hope you all are having as much fun as I am.  If you haven't already - and you get the chance - let us know you're out there and that you have received a treat from your Peanut.  The United States Post Office is not above losing packages and peanuts want to know that treats are actually making it.  As for me... oh yeah.  All last week my morning Starbucks was compliments of my generous Peanut.  Thank you!  You know the way straight to my heart.
  • To be ready for Friday night's Virtual Dinner Party, stop by your local Chinese restaurant and pick up a menu.  If you're going to invite friends and family, you might want to take orders ahead of time.
Signing off until tomorrow...

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm.....

I'm mad at myself.  Every day for the past ten days or so, when visiting Starbucks, there has been a sign posted on the community bulletin board.  I went back yesterday expecting to take a picture of it for today's post and wouldn't you know... it was GONE!

The picture was of a pet sloth and said something like"

"Lost sloth"
Ran away on... (then gave date)
Picture of sloth
Tortilla chips can be used to lure him back
If found please contact (name was inserted)
at (phone number)

I got to thinking days later (yes... it took days for this to occur to me)... HOW does a sloth move fast enough to run away?  Things that make you go hmmmmm....

When Katie (a fellow reader) and I were on our ice cream road trip a few weeks ago we also saw a few things we thought were curious.  See for yourself...
Now I know I'm a city girl, but "Clean Dirt
Wanted"... What does that mean?  Isn't that an oxymoron?

Or what about this? ...
Not the greatest picture, so let me help.
It is three race cars parked in the middle of a lake, with not a person to be found anywhere around.

Have you seen anything lately that makes you go "hmmmmmmm...?"  If so, share it with the rest of the group.  If not... keep your eyes open this weekend and let us know if you see something.

Signing off until tomorrow...

Free For All Friday:

Whoa... sorry I'm late today.  I got a late start.

A couple of announcements and then it's off to Free For All Friday...
  • Create-a-Flavor Contest:  So here's how the contest went down.  Richard voted for Maureen's Cappuccino Biscotti.  I voted for Cassie's Chocolate Masterpiece and Ricky voted for Lori's Vanilla with caramel, chocolate, chocolate covered (something... you left that part out), plain waffle cone bits, and pecans.  Matthew who is four idolizes his brother.  So... Matthew voted for, "whatever flavor Ricky picked."  That makes Lori the winner!  Thanks for all the great ideas everyone.  We actually generated some really good ideas.
  • Ketel One:  To all of you who thought there was no difference between the bottles, I agree.  I think the genius of the ad is precisely that.  No differences between the ads assures we - the general public - will pour over the picture for long periods of time... just to make sure.  Richard thinks I'm wrong and was emphatic about contacting the company to resolve.  I suspect the fact that he never came back to say, "I told you so" means he finally saw the light.

Onward and upward...  It's the time of day when I turn the blog over to you the readers.  Post a question, share something creative you've seen, or answer a question posed.  I have two items to get us started.
  • National Friendship Day:  I have this listed in my calendar as being Saturday, August 2.  A good friend of mine recently sent an email indicating that TODAY is National Girlfriend's Day.  Either way... it is time for us to celebrate our friendships.  Let's use part of today's Free for All generating a list of things we could do to honor/celebrate our friends.  Don't worry you found out too late to act on any of the suggestions.  I ascribe to the belief that when, for instance, you write a birthday card ON someones birthday it is just as special as their receiving the card on their birthday.  The same will apply with any gesture made on National Friendship Day.
  • Down with K.I.S.S.:  I can't stand it.  All week I've been looking at Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday's titles and cringing.  The title is not fun or funny and the colon immediately following the period is either a grammatical mess or a graphic train wreck.  Help me develop a new name for my "Scrap-Journaling" system, so I can change the titles.
Signing off until tomorrow...
